Sometimes Drupal is Like a
strange twisting labyrinth, tempting the wary developer with its secrets as the path turns and twists, slowly suggesting that an answer is around the corner. In just a minute or two. Or hour. Or two. Take the module "Role Expire," which might suggest by its name that an entire role can disappear at a time or duration that you, the developer, set -- leaving members and the role itself dumped by the roadside somewhere inexplicable. Drupal can be alarmingly inexplicable. However it appears that an individual user (assigned to a new role with its various new role permissions) can have an expiration duration/date/time assigned to her user account. When that time passes, it seems (ok, I've only tested this once so far but . . . ) the user's role is automatically switched from the new role (which its associated permissions) to the "authenticated user" role. Perfect. Expired user has her various permissions associated with that role (see Content Access used in tandem with a unique content type for which that role alone has access) revoked. This may be just want I want for the wwpfg.com website, which has been a long, winding labyrinth worthy of something a Druid might have created circa 1211.
