I want to explore how contemporary artists respond to political issues and current news/media through their own practice. I also want to consider the importance of artists replying and working within the time they live in. And explore the role of an artist when creating political responsive work. What can they offer the world that journalists, reporters and politicians can't? A different point of view? An altered way of looking? A questioning of authority, authenticity and truth of subject matter?
I am currently in my own art practice exploring collage techniques and combining elements of world news with celebrity culture magazine headlines and imagery. My collage works form an ironic and comical combination of two conflicting sources. Comparing and contrasting a variety of current news mediums and questioning the importance and place for a diverse set of news tools.
I feel that I am working with the 'now' and responding to the present time so this links with my dissertation theme and investigation. Previous work of mine has been based on mythology, historical documentation, museum classification, architecture and animal sayings/idioms, so I feel for the first time I am creating art that is contemporary and modern and that has relevance to the present-day.
