Jack Johnson Sings about Smoking with Willie
You can’t keep Willie Nelson down.
Seriously. Even at 82, Nelson gets - and stays - really, really high. He also likes to *cough, cough* share with his musician friends. He once got Toby Keith so baked that Keith wrote a song called “Weed with Willie” in which he vowed:
I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
That was probably a big, fat lie, because Willie has the best dope in Texas. And he uses it to twist big, fat, Texas-size doobies.
So it comes as no surprise that surfer dude/singer Jack Johnson, 40, was also the beneficiary of Willie’s largess and also got a song out of the deal. Performing at Farm Aid 30 on Sept. 19, Johnson, singing from a hand-written lyric sheet over a lazy, piano-driven melody, debuted a ditty of his own titled, “Willie Got Me Stoned and Took All My Money,” in which he recalls a hazy, bloodshot poker game.
It’s clearly written with love and reverence - and amazement at Willie’s tolerance for the ganja. And it’s pretty funny as he namechecks Nelson’s recent spiritual song “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.”
Would I really take a toke if they rolled Willie up and they smoked him?/hell yes I would and I know it might sound funny/but Willie got me stoned and took all of my money
