These nights, out here
I have always had the curiosity to look up, in my walks, towards the windows of the palaces and imagine the life that moves inside, build a story around it. I've been doing this since I remember, it's the vice of a lively child who never left my body.
At one point today, I opened my window. It was six o'clock and I was intrigued, because I felt Italy's anthem march and come to meet me faster and faster. Enter in the house and conquer me. And then, the thunderous 'yes' in the end was mixed with the flute that sang Bella Ciao. Lucio Dalla and Pino Daniele rose again with their Italian warmth. Voices continued to overlap and the first heads began to appear.
The crates were shooting songs like a juke-box and people came out of the balcony and terraces, one after the other, to discover, to peer, to look for each other. They ended up crossing with their eyes, to say hello, you're there too. Here we are. With our history, our fears and uncertainties, our certainties. Here and now we're hoping to be told that nothing is lost.
The show squeezed me so hard that I couldn't - as usual - hold back the tears. The further I go, the worse I'm dealing with emotions, but this is me - it's another story - and I'm not ashamed of it. I stared at them, stared at you, and felt an awareness grow. I might not have seen them in the area before, yet I recognized them well now. Those two spouses. That lady. Those two roommates. Those guys unable to stay at the right distance. That mother, with the baby in her arms and all the others. I looked at those faces as exclamation marks. ‘Those’ became soon 'we'. Despite its potential cruelty, in some moments of extreme need, humanities manage to perform big or small miracles better than a Christ.
Truly, truly, I say to you I have a conflicting relationship with the concept of hope, because I did not need to resort to it so far. I assumed it to be too surrendering and passive for how I am used to living, thinking and behaving, whilst I was not understanding how much strength it takes not to let it slip through my hands and see it fade away, how much it is capable of keeping us alive.
Yet I find myself thinking that it is such an Italian prerogative dealing with resistance. Even if we do not think about it, resistance is engraved in the history of us. It penetrated like a Trojan horse into our defenses, better than any virus could. It fills my heart to know that, these nights, out here, we will always be together, even if we are officially dispersed in our thoughts, with clean and devastated hands, or kneaded in our cakes, embraced to exhaustion and soaked in worries and waits. We will be together whether we are with someone or alone, with our houses lit to shine louder and louder in the middle of a silence that tears our ears, like so many rattles.
Roma Capoccia
Roma.
Roma è na città ‘ncantevole, co i suoi profumi, i suoi rumori, piena de vetrine, de negozi de arte e de storia.
C'è chi va 'n discoteca pe ballà, pe beve, pe dimenticasse pure er nome, e escono co quei ridicoli vestitini succinti o quelle ridicole canotte larghe.
