“Roman, come on!” You giggled at your boyfriend of exactly a year as he attempted to wake up, moaning and groaning the whole time. Today was your one year anniversary with Roman. August 10th... the day both of your lives changed for the better. It must have been fate you once said to him, which earned you some teasing. But you were convinced that it was no coincidence that you met him that day. Your morning routine after you left the house for work was always to grab a breakfast sandwich from Mcdonald’s and a coffee from Starbucks. You had been following that for over a year...until that day. That day you decided to switch it up a bit, thanks to your horoscope. You always thought they were silly. But when it told you it was time to make small changes in your life, you thought, “Why not?”
As you stood in line at the small cafe right down the street from your usual Starbucks, you could feel a pair of eyes on you. Sitting at a table in the furthest corner was your average but at the same time not-so-average looking tall, dark, and handsome man that most women swooned over. He had chiseled cheek bones, plump lips, and beautiful eyes. It also wasn’t hard to notice his dashing fashion sense. He wore a black button up with the sleeves cuffed just below his elbows. Black slacks and black leather dress shoes made up the rest of his outfit. A long, grey overcoat was draped on the chair next to him. You smiled at him and turned back around.
When it became your turn you began to order your usual, just a large, black coffee, but your horoscope popped into your head. Your order then became a large Caramel Frappuccino.
“That’ll be $5.37 please.” The cashier said.
You felt someone come up bedside you as you pulled out your wallet.
“It’s on me.” There was that beautiful stranger again, offering to buy your coffee.
“What, why? You don’t have to do that.” You told him.
He flashed his pearl white teeth at you with a smile, “It would be my pleasure.”
You stopped protesting as he paid for you drink.
“You really didn’t have to do that,” you said as the two of you stood at the side of the counter waiting for your Frappuccino. He chuckled while looking you up and down.
“Well I needed some excuse to come and chat you up. Figured that would be a nice way in. Who doesn’t like free stuff?”
You laughed at his statement. He was right, free stuff was nice. Especially from hot, mysterious strangers. Who was this guy? You don’t remember ever seeing him around.
Like he had read your mind, he began to introduce himself. “I’m Roman. Roman Godfrey. I run Godfrey Industries.” All the guilt of him paying for your drink went away after he said that. He must be loaded.
You guys chatted until your drink was ready, Roman was quite the conversationalist. That night after your shift at work, you two met up for drinks at the bar. One thing led to another, as they normally do with Roman. You were ashamed at first for sleeping with him on the first date. You expected him to not call again and quite frankly, he almost didn’t. He was happy just fucking different girls every other night. That’s how he liked to live; free. But you wouldn’t leave his mind, something that’s never happened to him before. You intrigued him in more ways than just sexual. So there was a second date, and a third, and a fourth... until eventually he asked you to be his girlfriend.
You were checking your outfit out in the mirror as Roman finally descended the stairs after taking almost two hours of getting ready. He was wearing dark jeans with a black v-neck, a pair of plain black shoes to match.
“I was expecting you to come down in a fucking Givenchy suit with the amount of time it took you to get ready!” You smiled, placing a small kiss on his cheek.
“Oh stop the complaining, you love me.” He laughed while taking in your appearance. You wore a long, mint green dress with tiny, pink flowers on it and white sandals to go with the new dress. Roman licked his lips.
“We could just skip the going out part and spend our anniversary in bed,” he said, nibbling on your ear lobe. As much as you wanted to stay in and have some alone time, you couldn’t pass up the lunch reservations you had tried so hard to get.
“Nope, I’m standing my ground. You cannot seduce me right now, Roman Godfrey!” You both laughed in unison at eachother. Roman smiled and laughed more than ever with you around, something he was thankful for.
He leaned down and placed a tender kiss on your glossy lips, which he pretends to hate every time you wear it.
“Now let’s go! I have the whole day planned for us!” You exclaimed, leading him out to the car. You guys got settled in, and you were on your way to your first destination a few seconds later. You turned the radio up and started belching out any lyrics you knew, earning a chuckle from Roman.
A few minutes later you guys approached a red light.
“So what’s the plans after lunch?” He asked you. He left the anniversary planning up to you.
“It’s a surprise! But if you really wanna know, I’ll give you three guesses.”
“Can I at least have some hints?”
You laughed and began to answer, “Hmmm, okay. Hint 1-“ but before you could answer, a loud crash and strong force simultaneously hit the passenger side door, causing the car to skid across the street and up a sidewalk. Your airbag ejected, smashing your head into the glass window and knocking you out almost instantly. Shards of glass flew all over the car. The door was bent from the force of the impact, trapping your arm between it and the seat. Roman hit his head against the steering wheel, causing him to curse out in pain and anger. When everything settled, your boyfriend immediately looked over to you.
“Baby, are you okay?” Roman looked over at you. “Babe? Babe! (y/n), wake up!” He gently shook you but got no response. Sirens could be heard in the distance. He guessed somebody walking by called 9-1-1. Before he knew it, he was being escorted out of the car by an EMT and taken to the back of an ambulance.
“You’ve got to get her out! Please, go help my girlfriend!” He frantically ordered to anybody who would listen.
“Sir, calm down. We have people over there now getting her out safely.” The EMT told him.
“Please tell me she’ll be okay, she’ll be okay right?” Roman felt hot. Tears welled up in his eyes.
“Sir, just calm down! We’re getting her into an ambulance, we’re doing what we can. We do not know the extent of her injuries just yet,” the man told Roman. He tried to look around for you, but eventually the EMT closed him in and the driver began to follow the ambulance you rode in. It felt like the longest ride of his life, but had only been 10 minutes in reality. You looked so lifeless in the car. The blood all over your head had been just been oozing out of your wound. The image wouldn’t leave his mind. Roman knew you were in critical condition by your lack of response... would you be okay? His heart began to race. He couldn’t lose you, he had only spent one measly year with you! That wasn’t enough, he thought. You couldn’t possibly leave him so quick, so out of nowhere. He began to think about all the times he took you for granted. All the arguments. All the times he was too busy with work to come hang out with you.
“Fucking idiot!” He muttered to himself. How sad it is when we take our loved ones for granted. They can be gone in the blink of an eye.
Roman paced his room back and forth waiting for news from the doctor performing your surgery. A few minutes after you two arrived, Roman was told you had multiple injuries, one being extremely severe. You had a concussion from hitting your head, a broken arm, and a shattered rib. The force of the impact was so hard, a piece of the broken rib punctured your left lung. The doctors claimed to be trying their very best to fix it but weren’t sure of the outcome.
It had been an agonizingly long two hours of waiting so far. He couldn’t stop over thinking, worrying... bad thoughts filled his head. What if you didn’t make it? What would he possibly do without you? As cliche as it sounded, he truly felt like he couldn’t live without you. It was no secret to anybody in Hemlock Grove that Roman was often unpleasant, rude, and full of drama. But you were one of the few people to not only see past all of that, but also try and help him grow as a person and be better. You were patient with him. You didn’t use him like many others had in the past. You were a blessing in his eyes. He felt so empty thinking about you leaving for good.
Roman felt his face getting hot again. The tears came quickly soon after that. All his pride disappeared and he let himself become vulnerable. He collapsed down onto his bed, sobbing loudly. A cry like this had been long overdue.
“Mr. Godfrey?” There was a knock on the door followed by a doctor entering. Roman wiped his face.
“You better have good news! I’ve been waiting two hours with no information and nobody checking on me! Do you idiots know who I am?” He jumped up off his bed.
“Mr. Godfrey, I understand you’re frustrated. Surgery takes time. I apologize that nobody has came to check on you but I am here with good news. We’ve stopped the bleeding and stabilized Miss (y/l/n). We’re sure she’ll be okay-“
“I need to see her!” Roman cut the doctor off.
“Yes, follow me. As I was saying, me and my team are sure she’ll be okay. She’ll obviously have to stay here in the hospital for a few more days, though,” he said as he led your excited but nervous boyfriend to you. He felt so relieved and so lucky. He knew you were a fighter.
“Oh, (y/n)!” Roman rushed over to you and lightly hugged you in and attempt to not hurt you further.
“I was so worried about you, (y/n).” He could feel tears welling up again as he took in your whole appearance. You had a big bandage over your forehead, probably covering your cut. He could see a few bruises scattered along your hairline where you bashed your head. Your arm was in a big, white cast. Your gown was covering the area of your surgery.
“I’m fine, love. I was worrying about you,” You said lightly. It hurt to speak a lot.
Roman chuckled. “You almost died and you were worried about me?”
“Of course I was,” you replied. He moved some stray hair out of your face, placing a light kiss onto you lips. You smiled at eachother.
“Remember Roman, fate brought us together. A little car wreck isn’t going to beat fate,” you teased. You knew he didn’t believe in that stuff.
Roman burst into laughter. “You are so amazing. Fresh out of surgery and already making jokes.” He smiled at you harder. In fact, his face was getting sore from all the big grinning he was doing.
“(y/n). I love you so much. I love you with my whole heart. I never thought i’d meet anybody like you! I always thought relationships were a waste of time, so boring. But you came into my life and changed all of that. You seriously bring out the best in me, parts in me I didn’t even know existed. I can’t thank you enough, (y/n).”
You were already feeling a bit emotional, and Roman’s statement just added fuel to the fire. You suddenly had tears running down your cheeks as well. You couldn’t tell if the crying was because of what he said, your pain, or a mixture of both. But you did know you loved Roman a fuckton.
“I love you so much, baby,” you replied lowly. He knew you couldnt say much at the moment. He placed another peck on your lips. What a way to spend your first anniversary together. Surely one for the books, he thought.
As you fell in and out of sleep for the next few hours, Roman never left your side. He was there every time you woke back up, every time you went to sleep, and anytime in between. Not only did he feel content watching you and being next to you, but he realized something - you were his home, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
