Gravestone of Flavius Lucianus

'To the spirits of the departed, Flavius Lucianus, soldier of the Second Augustan Legion

This is the top half of a gravestone found at Shirva Farm, which lies on the line of the Antonine Wall. The Roman gravestones found at this site commemorate both soldiers and civilians who lived at the nearby fort of Auchendavy. Excavations at Shirva in the 1960s revealed that the Wall's ditch was nearly 10 metres wide (32 feet) and at least 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) deep.
