Mystery Man
Who’s that guy?
A stranger at the curry chicken stall stood out from the sea of diners. While he was tall, it wasn’t his height that made him stand out. He looked stronger than any guy in the village, yet he was so skinny, he didn’t have any fat. He wore rags yet carried himself with an air of nobility. He was a vision of contradiction.
Who was he?
Eve couldn’t stop her thoughts from dwelling on him. He was... Fascinating.
Rap rap. “Hello little sister. Anyone home?”
“Ow!” sharp taps on her head broke her train of thought. “Annie. Cut that out.”
“Dreaming about the stranger?” Teased Annie, her annoying and bossy big sister.
“What stranger?” Eve ignored the heat building up in her cheeks.
“The guy who was making eyes at you,” smirked Annie. “It was so obvious, everyone noticed.”
“No such thing. I was thinking of what to cook for dinner tonight,” lied Eve.
As if on cue, she heard a deep, masculine voice behind her. “Eve! That’s your name, isn’t it?” A musky, heady scent enveloped her. Her heart thumped louder, faster that necessary.
Turning around, she saw him. That stranger. He was even taller than she’d thought. Handsomer. Hunkier. He towered over all the guys in the village.
“Who are you?” she blurted. Her cheeks burned. This was beyond embarrassing.
“I’m Stanley.” His smile lit his eyes. “May I help you with your basket?” He carried Eve’s basket for her.
“I’ll get onions for the rempah. Meet you at home.” Smirking, Annie shoved her load into Eve’s arms and scooted off.
“Sorry about my sis. She’s… like that,” she wanted to bury her head in the sand because of her sister’s lack of social graces. “Yes, I’m Eve,” she couldn’t stop herself from grinning like an idiot.
Without any break in his stride, he carried Eve’s basket with one hand and Annie’s with the other, as if they weighed no more than empty coconut shells.
He wasn’t from Indonesia. Stanley was from the tiny island known as Singapore. His stories fascinated her.
“Stanley! There you are,” another guy ran towards them. The guy looked worried. Scared of something.
“Ah Kow? What’s up?” Stanley turned to his friend.
“Can’t talk now,” the guy’s eyes darted at Eve. “Meet me at 3pm today. Don’t be late,” he slipped Stanley a note. Then he ran off.
“What was that about?” Curiosity piqued; Eve elbowed the hunk.
“An over dramatic friend of mine,” shrugged Stanley.
“He acts like someone is hunting him,” she giggled.
“Ah Kow’s paranoid,” laughed Stanley. “There was this time when he told me a ghost was after him.”
“A ghost?” the blood drained from Eve’s face. “Where?”
“At one of the benches in the marketplace, under a tree,” Stanley lowered his voice to a whisper. “He claimed a spirit lives in that tree.”
“Was it?” Goosebumps formed on Eve’s skin. “Was there a ghost?”
“It attacked while we were talking. We saw something white hidden in the tree above us,” Stanley looked so serious. “There was a screech. Then sharp claws dug into his head, like that.” Stanley fingers slid on her head.
Eve screamed.
Stanley laughed as she hit him with a carrot.
“It was a scared cat,” Stanley chortled. He brought it home and named it Snowball.
Stanley’s stories were fascinating. Before long, they arrived at the street where she lived.
“Hey Eve! Never introduce us?” Belle, who lived a few doors away, sashayed towards them, her eyes devouring the oblivious Stanley.
Eve couldn’t help noticing Stanley’s eyes drawn towards the hot babe’s hourglass figure. Jealousy stabbed, surprising her.
Stanley looked at Eve. His good-natured laughter warmed her heart. His hand wandered towards Eve’s before dropping away. Were his cheeks pink?
Belle leaned forward. She smiled like a tiger with its eye on a deer. “I’m Belle, Eve’s friend,” she fluttered her eyelashes. Then she took a few steps away, turning for a moment to throw him a kiss. Then she sashayed away on too high to be sensible heels.
“Does she behave like that to every guy she meets?” Stanley sounded incredulous.
“Yes. If she doesn’t, she’s not Belle,” Eve rolled her eyes.
Pixie, the family mongrel greeted them at the gate. He took an instant liking to Stanley, bathing the man with his tongue.
“We got some time before dinner preparations. Auntie Susie is showing us how to make her special kueh,” Mary tugged Eve’s arm.
“Would you like to join us?” Eve turned to Stanley.
“No guys. Sorry. Girls only,” irritating Annie popped up and ushered Eve into their home.
“Wait!” Eve looked up.
Stanley vanished.
“What’s that about?” hands on hips, Eve glared at her sister.
“That guy who called Stanley away? He’s a two timing buaya sailor,” Annie crossed her arms in defiance.
“So?” Eve countered. “That’s him. Stanley is different.”
“How do you know? Birds of a feather flock together,” Annie went into mother hen mode.
“You don’t even know him,” Eve protested.
“Tina knows him. He is her boyfriend. Jaime knows him. He’s her boyfriend too.
They only found out that he’s dating both of them today when we were buying onions,” Annie’s voice softened. “Stanley’s a sailor. He’s playing you too.”
