Min He’s hair tumbles out of her tie and spills down her back, settling comfortably against her waist. It sways, disturbed by a breeze, before you gather it all into your hands and begin weaving your fingers through the strands. The knots come undone easily and after a few urging tugs, a few locks come to rest over your forearms, tickling your skin.
You lean forward and, sensing movement, Min He obligingly leans back so that you’re speaking into her ear. “I heard that you got kicked out of the kitchen today.”
“Ah.” She laughs and some more hair is shaken from her shoulders. “That’s right, Qiu caught me cooking earlier today.”
“What were you trying to make?” With the larger knots out, you take the brush near your knees and comb through her hair, pulling away the locks from her face until you can see the outline of her smirk.
“I wasn’t trying to make anything.” Mischievously, Min He glances back. “I knew he was going to find me, so I boiled some water to see what he would do.” She pauses for effect, looking rather proud of herself. “He puffed up quite a bit.”
“Poor Qiu.” You scoff and tug on her ear teasingly as you pass it with the brush. “Between you and An, it’s a miracle he stays at the shrine at all.”
“Clearly, you have not been here long enough.” She responds prettily, angling her head up so that light reflects into her eyes, turning them into silver moons. “Our quail gets his fair share of revenge.”
“I’m sure.” You quirk a brow and, sensing your disbelief, Min He dissolves into laughter.
“You will see.” She promises coyly before straightening again. “In some ways, his jokes can be worse than An’s.”
You roll your eyes and chuckle yourself, before the sweeping the brush against her hair one last time. With it finally neatened, you coax the black locks all into your hand again, and then sweep it over her left shoulder so you can prop your chin onto her right. Min He hums, pleased, and her chi wraps around the both of you in a warm, protective blanket.
“Thank you.” She presses a kiss into your temple that washes over you like morning dew. Something like relief fills you, and you curl into that blissful feeling.
“Mm.” You soak in her warm affection, basking in it as if it were piece of candy melting over your tongue. You savor it all: the soft skin pressing against your cheek, her warm breath passing over your brow, her pulse fluttering against your own—you feel lulled and you can’t help but to yawn into her shoulder.
“Are you tired already?” Her laughter shakes you, and you snuggle closer to her in response. You feel her hand against your forehead, her cool fingers smoothing out the corner of your eyes before slipping down to cradle your jaw.
“It’s your fault.” You murmur, miffed, and she chuckles again.
“I see.” Min He says, and before you’ve realized it, she’s turned around so that you nearly drop into her lap.
“My apologies.” She whispers, pulling you close, and it’s like falling into cream, into a cloud of cotton where you’re surrounded only by her arms around your waist, her voice against your ear. “Let’s go to sleep then.”
