The Allenby War Memorial in the Romema Neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel; 1951. x
The Allenby War Memorial commemorates the surrender of the city of Jerusalem by Ottoman forces to the British Army during World War I. The mayor of Jerusalem at the time, Hussein al-Husayni surrendered to a couple of British kitchen Sergeants as he was unfamiliar with ranks in the British Army. A higher up officer was unhappy with this informal ceremony and demanded to do the ceremony again. His higher ranking officer then demanded to do the ceremony again, which was followed by the last surrender ceremony done in front of the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem with Field Marshal Edmund Allenby - commander of the British forces in the region. Mayor Hussein al-Husayni was not present at the final surrender ceremony as he caught phenomena from waiting on the hilltop for too long.
The Allenby War Memorial is located on the spot where Hussein al-Husayni surrendered to the two British kitchen Sergeants. The inscription on this memorial reads "Near this spot, the Holy City was surrendered to the 60th London Division, 9th December, 1917". The monument still stands to this day.
