Antonio Carlos Jr. vs Romulo Barral / World Championship 2012

I have beef with Antonio Carlos Junior (16-5). For those that don't remember, 'Shoeface' was an elite BJJ competitor that jumped to MMA back in 2013. A year later, he won the TUF Brazil Heavyweight tournament despite being only 212lbs on fight night. He then went to 205 and faced off with Pat Cummins in a fight where he was just a bit behind. Cummins, a huge, strong wrestler, managed to convince Shoeface he needed a bigger weight advantage and he dropped to 185lbs. Shoeface would have a mediocre run at mddleweight, capped off with a three fight losing streak. After getting cut, he went to PFL and moved up to light heavyweight again. Carlos Jr. then won the PFL tournament at LHW and the $1 million. Injuries and filming big brother have kept him away, but he's back. He won his comeback fight by first round sub so he's in a good position as the PFL playoffs approach.

So what is my beef? I think draining himself to cut to 185lbs was dumb. Maybe it would make sense now, when the division is full of athletic punchers. But in 2015-2019? Those were some really thin years. Lots of plodders with no type of wrestling game. Easily could have been a consistent top 15-10 fighter.

Carlos Jr will fight Alex Polizzi (10-4) at PFL 2024 4 this Friday (June 21).
