#OTD Thirty years ago today, May 4, 1987, more than 250,000 pages of the White House Special Files were opened to the public. The documents came from the files of White House staff members John D. Ehrlichman, John W. Dean III, Egil “Bud” Krogh Jr., Gordon C. Strachan, and Harry S. Dent. Prior to the May 4 release, the documents had only been made available for review by former President Richard Nixon, his legal counsel, the National Archives, and counsel working on the Watergate trials. The White House Special Files was a group of files created in September 1972 within the White House complex to provide a secure storage location for administratively and politically sensitive material, personal material, and material with the President's handwriting. Sensitive materials created prior to 1972 were removed from selected White House Central Files: Subject Files and from selected White House Central Files: Staff Member and Office Files, and transferred to the Special Files. Any potentially sensitive materials created after 1972 were placed directly into the Special Files. Among the documents opened to the public in the May 4 release were summaries of daily news reports that were annotated by President Nixon, documents left behind in the President’s desk following his resignation, and memoranda pertaining to key figures in the Watergate scandal. An additional nearly half million pages of the White House Special Files were released on May 28, 1987. Those come from the files of numerous Nixon administration staffers including Patrick J.
