Harvard’s First Black Faculty Deans Were Just Fired For Representing Harvey Weinstein In Court.

Law professor, Ronald S. Sullivan Jr., and his wife, Stephanie Robinson, were just let go from Harvard on May 11th.

“They were the first African-American faculty deans in Harvard’s history. But when Mr. Sullivan joined the defense team of Mr. Weinstein, the Hollywood producer, in January, many students expressed dismay, saying that his decision to represent a person accused of abusing women disqualified Mr. Sullivan from serving in a role of support and mentorship to students. Mr. Weinstein is scheduled to go to trial in September in Manhattan on rape and related charges.”

Harvey Weinstein is a bastard of a human being but guess what? He has LEGAL RIGHTS to a defense attorney, as does ANYONE convicted of a crime, no matter how horrible that crime is. THIS IS SORT OF THE MAIN POINT OF A DEFENSE ATTORNEY. Being on a legal defense team does not mean you condone the crime in any way!!! That’s just not how it works!! This isn’t like working for a company that indirectly profits Weinstein, or something like that. He’s not SUPPORTING the man in any capacity; he’s doing his job to process him through a court of law, as he should, because someone has to, because otherwise we wouldn’t be able to fairly convict Weinstein of his crimes!!

It is ridiculous that Harvard undergraduates are choosing to interpret Sullivan’s job in this way and extremely suspicious that it is a black professor and his wife who got this treatment, when other plenty of other Harvard defense attorneys have represented murderers and rapists and NOT been protested. If lawyers were supposed to avoid defending reprehensible crimes, then by extension of that ideal, Harvey Weinstein should have no defense lawyers at all, which, again, is A HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION. Defense attorneys have an EXTREMELY necessary role in our judicial system.

The fact that this is being hailed as a triumph of the #MeToo movement is absolutely disgusting. This is not what #MeToo is about. Harvard undergraduates should know better.

He is a global leader in combatting wrongful convictions and in advocating for criminal justice reform, having testified before Congress multiple times in this capacity and appearing regularly as a legal analyst on various major news networks. He was also tapped to represent the Family of Michael Brown in their wrongful death suit against the City of Ferguson and Darren Wilson – a case stemming from facts which have spawned a global movement and defined a generation. Professor Sullivan is a leading theorist in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, trial practice and techniques, legal ethics, and race theory. He is the faculty director of the Harvard Criminal Justice Institute and the Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop. Professor Sullivan also serves as Master of Winthrop House at Harvard College. Harvard University is declining to renew the dean position of law professor Ronald S. Sullivan Jr., who was part of a team with his wife leading one of the university’s residential colleges. Sullivan’s role has been under fire from students since he joined the legal team defending former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein from criminal sexual assault charges. S

Sullivan and his wife were the first African Americans to lead one of Harvard’s residential colleges.

While Sullivan will no longer lead the residential college, he remains a faculty member at Harvard Law, where he is the Jesse Climenko Clinical Professor of Law and director of the Criminal Justice Institute.

Residential deans at Harvard have responsibilities for out-of-classroom education. The position was previously called a “house master.” It is considered a prestigious honor.

Rakesh Khurana, the dean of Harvard College, sent an email announcing the decision to students at Winthrop College, where Sullivan and his wife, Stephanie Robinson, have been deans.

“My decision not to renew the faculty deans was informed by a number of considerations. Over the last few weeks, students and staff have continued to communicate concerns about the climate in Winthrop House to the college,” Khurana said. “The concerns expressed have been serious and numerous. The actions that have been taken to improve the climate have been ineffective, and the noticeable lack of faculty dean presence during critical moments has further deteriorated the climate in the house. I have concluded that the situation in the house is untenable.”

He added: “This is a regrettable situation and a very hard decision to make. I have long admired your faculty deans’ commitment to justice and civic engagement, as well as the good work they have done in support of diversity in their house community. I know that some of you are also proud of these efforts. I also know that some of you have been greatly helped and supported by your faculty deans in difficult situations. This decision in no way lessens my gratitude to them for their contributions to the college.”

In a joint statement, Sullivan and Robinson indicated they may take action on the decision.

“We are surprised and dismayed by the action Harvard announced today. We believed the discussions we were having with high-level university representatives were progressing in a positive manner, but Harvard unilaterally ended those talks,” they said. “We will now take some time to process Harvard’s actions and consider our options. We are sorry that Harvard’s actions and the controversy surrounding us has contributed to the stress on Winthrop students at this already stressful time.”

Sullivan represented the family of Michael Brown in reaching a settlement with the city of Ferguson, Mo., on a wrongful death claim. He has also been credited with securing the release of thousands of wrongfully imprisoned people.

A petition from Change.org called for Sullivan’s ouster, and noted that while Weinstein has a right to a lawyer, Sullivan couldn’t do that and be an effective college dean at Harvard.

“For victims of sexual assault and rape on this campus who already feel disempowered by the sheer lack of activity in reprimanding such behavior, the developments of Dean Sullivan’s professional work are not only upsetting, but deeply trauma inducing,” the petition says.

“To be perfectly explicit: I am not saying Dean Sullivan should not be defending Weinstein,” the petition continued. “I am saying that in his role as a house dean, his defense of such a figure induces a great amount of fear and hurt in victims of the crimes that Weinstein is accused of, and although anyone facing the law is innocent until proven guilty, the scope of the Weinstein case still literally shakes people on this campus to this day. His role on Weinstein’s team, and position as a community leader, are not mutually exclusive and the former has incredibly harmful implications for the latter.”

Harvard University, proving that no matter how rich you are, you can still be a coward

Over at Bloomberg Opinion, Stephen L. Carter has a crushingly accurate piece, “Harvard’s Shameful History Repeats Itself”, recounting how Harvard, which once let itself be bullied by Joe McCarthy, now lets itself be bullied by enraged feminists and other pc types, dismissing husband and wife Harvard Law professors Ronald Sullivan and Stephanie Robinson as deans of Winthrop House, which I take it is some sort of Harvard-style dorm. Sullivan’s great offense is choosing to represent uber schmuck Harvey Weinstein and Robinson’s is being married to Sullivan.

I certainly don’t find Sullivan’s choice to represent Weinstein attractive. It’s not like Sullivan’s representing some indigent loser accused of raping a six-year-old. Sullivan’s letting himself be used by Weinstein (Sullivan’s black) in return for both cash and, far more importantly, notoriety. But if having an Alan Dershowitz-sized ego meant losing a position at Harvard—well, the rest of the sentence writes itself.

What I find most disturbing about this is the fact that it's Harvard. Not in the sense that, "This is Harvard, they ought to know better!", but in the sense that, "This is Harvard, some substantial percentage of these students will go on to wealth and influence; if this is how they behave as relatively 'powerless' students, what reason do we have to expect they won't retain these same behaviors when they become society's decision and opinion makers?" That's terrifying to me.
