The Chance You Didn't Take
Reading the comments on Ronja's TCYDT on AO3 is half the fun of the fic reading experience. Some of them are hilarious. Honestly I'm glad that Ronja isn't easily offended. I would be frustrated by now.
Forest Fairy's The Hunger Games Fanfiction Recs V
You've read the trilogy maybe even more than once. You love Everlark but you just can't help yourself you need to know more about Katniss. Her real inner feelings, her relationship with Peeta. Basically something that is not focused on Katniss being at the centre of a revolution and war, but a story that focuses on emotions. They might be complicated, they might be angsty but you just can't help it, you want more and the books didn't measure up in that department. Your wish is about to be fulfilled. In this installment of my recs I will focus on a wonderful lady who - without a doubt - is my personal favourite The Hunger Games fanfiction writer:
Ronja (tumblr)
Believe it or not, Ronja doesn't spend her time in the woods with Birk, she writes The Hunger Games fanfiction. She might even be Astrid Lindgren reincarnated. (Her stories aren't for children, though) Ronja is Swedish, but has a better command of the english language than many native writers. Swedish people are good at english, but writing high quality prose like hers in english is nothing short of amazing. When you read Ronja's stories it is like reading a novel, and I honestly think and hope that she should write /is writing original fiction. She deserves to be a published author and has a whole lot of talent. I would say she is wasted on fanfiction even, but that would be unfair. There is a lot of talent and great fanfiction out there that outshines many "established" authors who have their work published for reasons that go over my head. If you're willing to get on this journey you might want to bring time. Ronja's stories tend to be long. She's written a few Oneshots, so this might be a good place to get started. Ronja always writes Katniss POV stories, first person narrative like the books. I recommend
New Love - a short and sweet story about a beautiful morning in bed with Everlark.
and
Safe and Sound-a great oneshot about Peeta and Katniss coming to terms with their status as "real" lovers and what that means for their privacy.
If you finished Safe and Sound and liked it, I recommend you to tackle her longer works. If you're in the mood for fluff Baby Steps is perfect - a story about Katniss' first pregnancy and how it came to be. If you have a whole lot of time, are bored or just feel like you want a bit of pain,
The Greatest Sacrifices - is for you. In this epic story you can find another popular canon divergence twist, pregnant Katniss during Catching Fire. But what Katniss actually does about it in this story is totally new and interesting. Bring time and tissues. At 21 Chapters and 232,159 words (at AO3) it's certainly novel length. It has almost as many words as the trilogy. But don't be afraid. It is not boring at all. Maybe you shouldn't read it all in one sitting but that will be hard. It is like that page turner you simply can't put down.
At the time I'm writing this Ronja has two longer works in process which she is updating regularly. Usually you can expect a new chapter every two weeks or so, and they tend to be fairly long. She doesn't seem to have a tight schedule or update on certain days in the week, so finding a new chapter is always a nice surprise. For some reason she is updating the newest chapter on AO3 first while her fanfiction.net profile is behind one chapter. Be prepared for pain, conflict and angst. Labyrinth - A story that was started in the beginning of 2014 and is currently at 15 chapters. Once more, the premise is actually something that is quite common in THG fanfiction. Katniss and Peeta are forced to marry for real. The revolution doesn't happen. In Labyrinth Ronja experiments with an interesting idea. She skips between times, meaning she alternates between chapters in the past (beginning when Katniss and Peeta marry) and the present (17 years later, when Katniss and Peeta mentor in the Hunger Games). Their nephew is reaped in the 91st Games in the first chapter and that has consequences on their relationship. But how did they even get that far and what happened in those 17 years? The past chapters answer these questions. This experiment works well. You just can't wait to find out what happened to them in the past, and the present is exciting as well, as you don't know how the 91st Hunger Games will work out. Give it a try, it is definitely worth it. The other story she is writing was started in June this year. It is called The chance you didn't take - There aren't many fics around where the reviews are almost chapter length themselves, but you can find that here. It is probably not the best story for you if you're hardcore Everlark and can't stand to see them with other people. But that's Ronja for you. If you've read The Greatest Sacrifices you should know that she doesn't shy away from confrontation. In this story Katniss must come to terms with the fact that Peeta is not in love with her anymore, while she very much is. Is he really over Katniss? I don't want to tell too much about this story and it is not finished yet. I recommend this story for all those who enjoy conflicting emotion and heartbreak. Ronja announced that she's writing a few chapters/chaplets? in Peeta's POV. I'm looking forward to see where she is going with this and how she'll tackle Peeta's issues. I honestly can't tell you which story of Ronja's I enjoy the most. They are all special, they are all great. What do I like when it comes to this author generally? First of all she doesn't transform Katniss and Peeta into saints. Especially Peeta often comes off as such a saintly guy in fanfiction that it is unrealistic. In Labyrinth I'm kind of angry at him at this moment, but I really enjoy that she can make me feel this way. And Katniss ain't much better. She is really quite unaware in Ronja's stories. I see Katniss and Peeta that way, I imagine them that way and I think she stays pretty near the perfect characterization. As this is fanfiction you can counter argument with the usual chorus of OOC or they would never do this or that. For me Ronja's characterization is top notch. Also she possesses the ability to create interesting original characters that never overtake the story but are realistically interwoven into the flow of each chapter. Usually I'm not a big fan of original characters in any story, but they are often needed in THG fanfiction, because the cast is not that big. I even care for some of her original characters and that does mean something! This post became quite the novel in itself it seems. Deservedly so in my opinion. Do yourself a favor and read her stories, you'll probably cry or rip your hair out but if you enjoy drama and conflict you won't regret it. Ronja is the One!
The Greatest Sacrifices
Victor
''Ask her to throw the ball for you. She’s got a good arm''
He’s the only family I’ve got.” “You don’t have him, Peeta”
“I want him, Katniss.”
“I already got a lawyer. I’m getting my son back''
“This isn’t you, Peeta” I plead. “Don’t let this change you.”
The Greatest Sacrifices
Apparently 'The Greatest Sacrifices' has been updated, but I have already read that chapter ....?
