Additional 2x4s were placed across the frames to help support the beam. This gave us a very strong point to rest the beam on and if the beam fell, it would only go as far as the wood cross members. Strong screws were used as blocks to guide a rope to make a pulley system. Two screws were set into the truss, one on each side of the peak, and a third screw was set on the underside of the ridge beam to keep the rope from slipping off. A rope was securely tied to the trailer to provide an anchor point, over the truss, under the beam, back over the truss, and out to my mom who was manning the ropes. This assembly was tied on both ends so that as we (my dad and I) heaved the beam up, my mom could take out the slack in the line. This provided enough purchase for her to comfortably hold the beam in the air while we rested. We would heave up a few inches, then she would take up the slack, and we would rest; then repeat! The screws and wood edges offered too much resistance to pull the assembly up by the pulley system, so it was relegated to holding the beam up and taking out the slack. We raised the single width section first and positioned it into the strong tie at the top of the truss and a lashing was tied to the beam to keep it attached to the truss while we focused on the other end of the beam. The very heavy end (with the scarf joint and butt blocks) needed to be raised above the truss and lowered into the strong-tie channel to fully secure it. This came down to brute force as there was no nice way to rig a pulley system to hoist the beam into the place. I bit the bullet and lifted the very heavy beam high up and carefully into position. Then the ends were secured with screws to hold it in place! Due to the extreme weight aloft, we had set up wooden stays inside the structure which were tied together and to the floor. We were very happy these were in place when that weight loaded the walls. If we were building on a level surface, they might not be needed. Being how we are building on a slight incline, the whole structure is leaning back. All of that weight up there would easily rip the trusses out and send the upper structure crashing down! Now that the ridge beam is installed, it's time to start adding the rafters.

Not Describable

For lack of a better thing to do, I’m spending most of my summer vacation reading Internet literary guides of Salinger’s novellas, novel, and short stories, and I thought I’d share with you whatever knowledge I’ve picked up from them. Stories, excuse my literary-dorkness, that have changed my life, in a way.

I’m going to share four posts. Each post will revolve around one of his stories and whatever I have to say about it.

This is the third one.

Seymour and Buddy are the eldest of the Glass siblings, and they, together, have sealed in their younger brothers’ and sisters’ minds how important it is to be intelligent, precocious, and spiritual. Yes, Seymour and Buddy do sound like perfect people, but the truth is, they have some problems of their own.

In “Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters,” Buddy narrates the events that followed Seymour’s wedding—or the events that followed after its non-occurence, actually. Here Buddy tries to tell us how broken Seymour is—he tells us why Seymour chose not to appear at his own wedding.

Buddy also is the narrator of “Seymour: An Introduction.” This is not as much a short story as it is his attempt to describe Seymour to us. It doesn’t have a plot; it’s a piece of literature shared in fragments.

I read these two short stories shortly after having read Franny and Zooey. It is something that will never be forgotten—something that has brought something extraordinary to me, my intellect, and my knowing of the universe.

Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters

As mentioned above, this story’s about Seymour’s wedding and his running away from it. Buddy was the only one who could attend it—he even took a three-day leave from the Army just to attend this really special day in his brother’s life. So he was somehow disappointed to find out that Seymour stood up to his bride, leaving her alone with the fading hope that Seymour would ever be sane.

The parents of the bride still decided to push through the reception part of the wedding, despite the emotional distress of the bride and basically everything else. Buddy would find himself stuck in a car with four strangers, one of which judges Seymour so harshly.

After a turn of events (which I’m too lazy to write about) Buddy would lead these strangers to his old New York apartment, something he and his older brother shared. Here he would find some memories that, at the end, would make him nostalgic.

I guess what makes me like this story is its having no plot. I mean, there is a plot, but not one that would show you what’s inside the character’s minds. Buddy adores his brother. He wants to see for himself what happens on this day—and what he witnesses leaves him disappointed.This shows us how peculiar Seymour is, if not insensitive and tactless.

What forged this kind of special bond between Seymour and Buddy is subtly told. They were both intelligent, and they know a lot about the universe and its properties. Yet, even if it isn’t really necessary to mention, they were, somehow, emotionally unstable. I say “somehow” because you wouldn’t really find out; they’re just these interesting beings who have a lot to offer to the world. They’re likable, yes, but they share this thing, which I can’t physically describe.

Needless to say, Buddy understands Seymour. Hearing those harsh comments from the stranger wasn’t entirely hurtful—over the years he’s learned that not all people are as informed as they are—but they were definitely something he wanted so badly to disprove, mostly because he felt what Seymour felt, saw what Seymour saw, and thought what Seymour thought.

Seymour: An Introduction

This one doesn’t have a plot. It’s just a piece of fiction written as if it were non-fiction. But through this small piece we can see Buddy’s desire to write Seymour—to put him on paper, to transfer what he was into words. And, again through this seemingly incessant rambling, we could see his failure to do so, his mental struggle to deal with the unit of complexity that takes the form of Seymour Glass.

It’s obvious that Buddy was trying to make his readers like the idea of Seymour—that though he was just a human, he was still a human. And there we see that he, not only as a brother but as a remote confidant, appreciated what Seymour thought of the world. We get to see Buddy, too. We learn that he was a professor at a girls’ college. We learn that he lived remotely. And we learn that he’s just Salinger in disguise.

He mentions, too, that the Glass siblings were all entertainers, including himself. So the question lets itself out: How is Buddy an entertainer?

Well, to start with, he was a writer. That’s simple, but once you get to see him, get to know what thrives in that brain of his, we’ll learn that he’s a writer with special intentions—to inform the world of what he already knows, knowing that in some way this would help the human race to be better.

Through these two pieces of literature we understand that Buddy loved Seymour so much that he wanted us to know all that he’s learned from him. There are many things that come in between, but the two most important themes of this book are, strongly, love and isolation. And Buddy was capable of doing that: he mixed love with isolation to describe his brother.
