Throwback to June when we were able to share Turtle Patrol with a youth camp put on by the Marco Island Police & Fire depts. The kids got to see a new loggerhead crawl and freshly laid eggs. We had an impromptu Q&A right there and - to be honest - I think the officers & firefighters were more excited than the children! It was great seeing our local authorities reinforce the importance of obeying the laws protecting these animals. Everyone who guessed Batfish was correct! This is a polka-dot batfish (ogcocephalus cubifrons) and it’s the Rookery Bay mascot. What I’m demonstrating in the video is how the batfish uses its modified dorsal spine as a lure to attract prey - and then look at how it’s pectoral fins have evolved into little “legs” for walking along the sea floor. Nature can be mind-blowing sometimes.
