Most American schools are constrained to teach by standards laid out to them by each state. These standards are then tested every spring. With the stress put upon standardized testing in schools, and the lack of time and money made for schools, there are many parts that are left out within the daily curriculum. So many of us don't know what chiasm is unless we pursue it in higher education or on our own time. And if it is talked about, it's mostly a sentence or two and that's it.
Hopefully, that might clear some of it up.
