Mars Landing: Revisited

I’ve been on a New Girl rewatch. Every time I get to Mars Landing, I just feel dread, sometimes even postponing watching for days, as I did this time. In fact, the dread starts about the time of the first Sister episode, but anyway....

This time around, though, I really wanted to take a closer look at the episode, to see where exactly everything truly started to unravel. These are just a few of my thoughts:

1) The episode is just so ridiculous. It comes absolutely out of nowhere, leaving you blindsided. Yes, while Nick and Jess don't agree on a future, most of what they are both describing are fantasies. Nick didn't say he had to be long-haul trucker, just that it might be cool. And hungover Jess takes him so seriously while spouting off her own outrageous fantasies, all of them giving him no say. And Jess forcing Nick to build a toy for her friend's kid's birthday seems a little nuts. Like Nick said, maybe they would've wanted to return it or put it together as a family.

2) While the episode is designed to make it seem like Jess is always so responsible and Nick is such a screwup, Nick is the voice of reason throughout the episode, space trucks aside. Take a look at some of the things he says:

- “Never talk about anything serious when you're hungover, Jess.”

- “Here's what I really believe: You can create a plan for your life, and then crazy things get thrown at you, and that, by the way, is the closest thing that I have to a plan.” (But seriously, amen on this one.)

-”Just break up! Over what?”

-”This is not why people break up!”

-”Well, why did we take the toy out of the box? We could have just given the box to the kid.” (YUP.)

3) Jess says if she was always honest with Nick they would never stop fighting, and that she doesn't want to fight all time. Ummmm, what? I would hate to think that most of season 3 was just Jess pacifying Nick. Also, based on what we the viewers see, they fought waaaayyyy more when they were just friends. That's what they want to go back to??

4) I truly think the whole last scene was Nick giving Jess an out. He did not want to break up with her! He was adamant about it when he emphasized how much he loved her. But he was thinking he was never going to be able to be the version of him she had in her head. He didn't think he could ever measure up. When she was worried that love was the only thing they had in common, that's when he says he misses his friend. And just like that, it all comes undone.

5) However, the whole separation of friendship and love here makes Five Stars for Beezus that much sweeter, when Nick says, "I gotta tell my best friend I'm in love with her."

It should not have taken 3 years to get back together, but at least they eventually figured things out. I can't help but imagine what it would have been like had they not broken up in S3 (I can argue that there were many reasons S3 struggled, and Nick and Jess being together was not at the top of the list. Maybe in another post).

Ugh, Mars Landing is finally behind me again. Moving on....

I miss all the conversations I used to have with other fans, I miss the gifs, I miss the fic...but I’m so pleased many people have discovered the show for the first time through these awful times we’ve been experiencing. And I’m happy there is suddenly new activity and content for them to share in.
