I just realized I could get sappy about my characters on the internet and talk and no one could stop me.
I don't know if Phase 2 of Sense and Salarian Ability is going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's kind of a pause from the action (which - yeesh - has been a two year pause because I suck at time management) and might not always be immediately consequential to the overall plot. Would I write one of my original novels like this? Probably not. Between Phase one and phase three is a six to seven year time gap. Tegan doesn't know how old she is, but in phase one, I was picturing that she had just turned eleven. The growth between eleven and seventeen is a vastly different person. It'd be like getting to know her all over again.
And six to seven years for Lau? A SALARIAN? Especially such a repressed adult as he is? There's some milestones that'd I'd miss in him.
I dunno. I thought it'd be fun to look at snapshots of her growing up and growing into an artist. I might lose/ might have lost some people doing this. That kinda sucks, I hate being that person who loses interest when they feel a story is dragging. I'd hate to be the writer who made the dragging.
Here's where I get snappy as ffffffffudge:
I'm having so much fun writing these two as my favorite trope: The Adoptive Dad (Ob'ajoh if we're being anal; which I enjoy very being) and his twerp daughter. They got off to a slow start, it took a tragedy in Tegan's life to get them to the point where they could be this but now we're here. And I get to luxuriate in all these little moments.
Lau is not an openly affectionate person, Tegan kind of needs that open affection as a neurodivergent kid. Tegan isn't great at reading people but she's got to learn how to do that for Lau. So them growing? Slowly being affectionate? Not demanding of the other when the world coughtheRoponscough does do a lot of demanding? I hope readers can feel me kicking my feet and doing little happy dances behind the screen.
I've been out of the game of drawing so long that I don't draw these two near as much as I'd like to. All my experience is in pencils. Digital art escapes me, with all those buttons and layers and bleh. But I am thinking about Lau and Tegan so often.
Rip Aelin, he would HAAAATE this.
I started this story in 2020, a little before the pandemic, when I was twenty three. I'm going to be thirty this year. These two are my twenties... It's weird to think I've spent so much time with them. I didn't think I would back then.
Bear with me while I be self indulgent for a couple more chapters here. Chapter 27 is already in the works, and I've got almost a full page of Lau mourning his ageing eyesight.
If anyone wants to add a thought of these two like needled paper airplanes, please feel free to do so. T'would make me ever so giddy to see how you play with them.
Beyond that, I've got a young teenage girl and an amphibian to go lightly traumatize. Be ye teased on what chapter 27 is about.
