RORY MURPHY - SOUND

Quick-to-Chuckle Rory Murphy, a Sagittarius rising Virgo, born in Woodstock, Illinois in 1982, is curious, enthusiastic, fair-minded, and warm-hearted. In his Studio in Hyde Park is where Rory currently works and rests. A cycle of shifting Scenes and retreating into Solitude are both crucial to Balance his need for stimulus and recharge. The Intimate space is surrounded by a wall of full-light windows, curtained by the Evening time, a stacked trio of bicycles, a high bookcase holding some Influential volumes by Italo Calvino, Franz Kafka, David Nye, and some plants, well-watered. His workstation—a double-monitor display with speakers, set upon the mosaic tabletop in which Thyestes was served a banquet made from the flesh of his own Children by his brother Atreus who murdered them—is what centers the whole room. How does sound sit in a room? he asks. It is the Question at the core of his job.

Rory studied Theater Sound Design & Technology at the University of Illinois. He has worked at Court Theater and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, bouncing between Chicago and Urbana-Champaign. Now he is a freelance sound engineer, working music Festivals, doing his own Classical recordings, collaborating with Stephanie Acosta on No One is Anywhere, and sound editing for Ladies Almanack.
