The wind whipped through his hair, the hood of his matted and dirty suit falling back, chest heaving as he tried to breathe through the bitter, winter air that slapped him in the face. His skin was raw and cracked, his fingernails were caked with dirt, and his stomach growled in an angry protest. He crawled through the forest. Palms and knees sore from the continuous weight put on them. He doesn't remember much of why he ran, just the overwhelming struggle to breathe through a throat clogged with tears, and the screams of two people playing parent. He knows he bolted, he growled, he scrambled out the squeaky back door, and tripped his way into the dense Washington forest.
Night wasn't like night in the safety of a room, or night on his island where he had K. W. and Carol to gather him close from the silence, the loneliness. This night was harsh and black and never ending, and he can't sleep, can't do anything but stare out at the night. He couldn't find the island. There was no boat. No water. He couldn't find it, no matter how many times he squeezed his eyes shut and wished for it.
Eventually, fatigue won out, and with an empty stomach and frozen fingers he drifted in and out of sleep, the sounds of the forest soothing and frightening him all at once. He curled down into the damp leaves that had settled into a pile beneath one of the large and mossy trees. He fell asleep to snow sticking to his cheek, and his fingers, sticky and stained black with dirt curled beneath his chattering chin. All he wanted was to go home. All he wanted was to be with his friends, his family, his wild things.
