but that’s my point he’s uncomfortable defending, always has been, and now he’s expected to play what is a defensive role, a role that in most other teams is given to a defender. He doesn’t see himself there longterm and it also effectively makes him irrelevant to an English side that doesn’t have this position. It seems like at this point he sees his only option is to leave or else go through the stress of learning what is for all intents and purposes a new position.
also imo it doesn’t matter what managers think he should do, he knows himself. Arsene tried to convert Francis to a right back. When he went out on loan managers there would attempt the same. He was completely lost and he never did master the new position. Some ways of playing are just so unnatural to a player that they’ll only be miserable trying it and I think that’s how Chambo feels about wingback.
