Rey and Poe? (For the ship ask meme)
MY BABIES!!! YAY! Naturally: I ship it!
Your honor, it's all @dameronalone's fault. Technically, anyway! So, back when the Force Awakens came out, sixteen year old me was obsessed with FitzSimmons from Agents of SHIELD at the time, so friends to lovers + being in sync was my whole thing. So I actually left the theater shipping FinnRey (they still have a soft spot in my heart, ngl) and I wasn't quite yet a multishipper, but I was obsessed with Poe & Rey as a dynamic already. In fact, I spent the next year working on a multichapter retelling of TFA where Poe and Rey were best friends (and Rey was Hanleia's daughter. It was very self-inserty before I knew what those were).
Crucially. Finnrey was supposed to be the main ship in that fic, but...Poe and Rey didn't quite behave. There was always an energy to their moments that kept my scratching my head, cos I was sure I didn't ship it (could've been the crush on Poe and aforementioned self-inserty nature of the story tbf).
Enter: 2017 and my best friend. Briar shipped Damerey like there was no tomorrow, and was my introduction to the dynamic romantically. They wrote so many wonderful fics, recommended me their fave fics in the fandom, and then the Meet Cute of the century happened in the Last Jedi, and I was fucking sold.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
For me, the best love stories are transformative. They challenge each other to grow, and understand each other - perhaps not perfectly, but there being an innate understanding of what drives the other person, maybe because it's similar to what drives them.
I also really fucking love symbolism in my ships. If there's no symbolism, then I probably won't be super interested in it.
Poe and Rey have this in spades for me. I think Poe is one of the few people in the trilogy, that sees Rey for exactly who she is, and doesn't...coddle her, for lack of a better word? He knows what she's capable of, and isn't afraid to challenge her when he's caught her falling into genuinely bad coping mechanisms (Rey is avoidance gorge, and Poe recognizes this and calls it out).
A lot of characters in the trilogy - for completely understandable reasons! - tend to prioritize protecting Rey, over pushing her out of her stagnant comfort zone and helping her grow into who she's meant to be (ex: Han, Finn, Leia, etc). And Poe certainly cares about Rey, but he's not prioritizing protecting her over helping her grow, and that? Really appeals to me. The only times we see Poe really freak out about Rey's safety is with the serpent, when she crosses the ocean on Kef Bir, and when he finds out Palpatine wanted her for some reason.
This is something that I also realized just recently, while complaining about a badly characterized story, but it really stands out to me that Poe just. Trusts Rey so implicitly. We know from TLJ he's not great at putting his faith in just Vibes, but any time Rey has a revelation or a feeling, Poe believes her and follows her. He never once questions her intuition in TROS, and I really fucking love that.
And the symbolism. Light and sunlight in particular, is a huge motif for Poe's character arc, and like. Rey, hello. The homing beacon? The fact that Poe carries it for most of TLJ, and it's meant to "light her way home", and he affirms to her that she's somebody, once they finally meet? How besotted they are with each other, almost instantly? The smashcut from her torture to Poe jerking awake on the transport? Poe instantly knowing that it's Rey's plans to draw the TIEs away from the speeders?
And finally, I mean. We know they're each other's type. Rey canonically falls for Ben (a curly, dark haired pilot who wanted to follow in the footsteps of their rebellious pilot parent but ended up on a far different path in life, who challenges her into growing, and has a really dry sense of humor?), and Zorii on the surface might parallel Ben morseo than Rey, but we do know that she was meant to follow in the footsteps of her "evil" family, but chose not to, she's harsh and cutting towards people as a defense mechanism, but really longs to run away and have someone by her side and not be alone, and is honestly kind of possessive. Which...you know, sounds a lot like Rey.
Also thanks to reylo, we know Rey's method of flirting is yelling and biting and hissing. Guess how she spends 80% of her time with Poe, lmao.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I feel like I have a lot just by the basis of being a multishipper? Although off the top of my head, I feel like a lot of the approaches I've seen to Damerey are very black and white in regards to Rey's relationship with Ben/Kylo. And, obviously, how people want to approach that is absolutely understandable, that dynamic can be particularly triggering to some people, it has been in the past for me also, and it can be cathartic to just push that off as an abusive past relationship that Rey doesn't have any complicated feelings about.
But. I started getting really interested in messy dynamics last year (can't imagine why), and how Star Wars explores loving people who have hurt you, and believing they can be better, and how those beliefs can really put you at odds with the people around you, that the person you love have also hurt.
And I think that is something I've really been mulling over, with Damerey, lately. Because I think Rey falling for Poe, after the events of either TLJ or TROS, opens the door for a lot of complicated feelings for her. She felt something for Ben, is able to forgive him for what he's done for her, but how can she reconcile those feelings with knowing he's hurt Poe, you know? It's this really messy thing with no right or wrong answer, that reminds me a lot of like - Leia and Luke with Vader, right?
I don't have enough coffee in me yet but. Yeah, I think Damerey in the context of Rey having real, messy feelings for both Poe and Ben, is a lot of fucking fun and I really want to write it. I like when Star Wars gets messy with interpersonal drama and trauma.
Send me a ship and I’ll answer three questions based on if I ship it or not.
