Some riffing on Martin as E K Ross
Originally, I'd wondered why Martin had opted to play Everett Ross in the MCU. From what I could gather of the comics, I thought his character was either going to be the token white guy lackey (which I was cool with if they took from Priest's run, but wasn't sure they would take that surrealist tone, although Ragnarok has since proven me wrong lol), or a Coulson mark #2. After Civil War, it seemed apparent that the Coulson-type was on the cards, which was totally cool and worked well. I was hoping herein we'd find out more about what drew Martin to the role through BP, as I had a feeling there was something else to the role we weren't aware of that had him snapping it up.
Then I had a bit of a Eureka/mind-splodeying moment while watching a summary vid tonight on YouTube of Martin's comments about Everett Ross in BP. He's described Ross as being "the coolest guy in the room", "competent at his job" and "well-travelled", not particularly overawed dealing with superheroes, more "exasperated". Now, I'm the last person on earth to relate Martin's roles directly back to Sherlock if I can avoid it, but goddamn, that sounds so eerily similar to the tone of character he was going for with John in S1. Except as we all know, that's not really how John's character turned out. Of course, at the time I was iffy about Martin taking up the role of Ross, there was no way of knowing about the rampant clusterfuckery S4 would throw at us. So if BP is some kind of (conscious or subconscious?) attempt to reprise that general tonal rendition of S1!John Martin was originally so keen to portray in Sherlock under a different name, I'll will more than happily lap it up 👍👍👍
