Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U Final Roster Reaction

So, as many are aware, Smash Bros 3DS is now out in Japan and in just a few hours, we quickly found out that the roster that was leaked out was the true final roster. Even though we in the US aren't the getting the game until next month, I think we can talk about the roster. 

First off, what do I think? Well, its not as bad as I thought but....it is pretty disappointing. Not to say that Melee or even Brawl had perfect rosters but I just feel like we were expecting a lot more out of this game than we did in Brawl. Let me explain:

1. The newcomers:

I think this might have been the toughest choices this time around. I feel like the first batch of newcomers were the best choices like Rosalina, Little Mac and Greninja. However, you can say several of the now released new choices are a bit questionable (one I will bring up later). When I first saw Duck Hunt Dog, my first thought was this character will be a disaster but watching the stream, he's a pretty creative choice, not to mention, adorable. Bowser Jr was another risky choice considering that he is considered to be a hateable or annoying video game character, in fact, I have seen many reviewers put him on their top 10 Hated Video Game Characters lists. Plus, putting him in a Clown Car mech was another bold move, considering how he could have easily been a clone of Bowser. While there could have been other better choices, I will give a pass to the newcomers. However....this brings the next part.

2. Clone Characters:

I am going to say it, I am so sick and tired of clone characters. So, it has been confirmed that Falco and Ganondorf are still clone characters. I think it annoys me more with Ganondorf considering the fact that there is a lot to do with him in terms of moves and swordplay, they don't utilize them. In the newcomers section, I left out one newcomer who is completely pointless. And that is Dark Pit. Why? Well, from the stream and player confirmations, he is only Pit with a different final smash. That is not a good thing, why you ask? Well, in order to understand my gripe with this, I need to address today's smash pic of the day. It was confirmed earlier, that Olimar is getting an alt character in the form of Pikmin 3's Alph. This is a great idea to avoid giving a clone character a roster spot and making him an alt instead. So....why couldn't they have done this to Pit? If they can with Olimar, there is no excuse. Hell, the same can be said with Dr. Mario, who could have easily been an alt for Mario. As for Lucina, who was confirmed to be sort of a clone of Marth, I think she passes through the radar because she is a little different. Overall, I see no reason to give an obvious a clone character a roster spot when someone like Olimar can have an alt character with the same moveset.

3. The Comeback Character:

I think the is biggest question among a majority of Smash fans. Smash actually brings back one of the removed 5 from Melee. Obviously, the fan favorite to return was Mewtwo, That did not happen. Instead, it was Dr. Mario who returned instead. I will admit, Dr. Mario is my main in Melee but I just do not see him as a separate good choice. As I said earlier, it would have made more sense to have the doctor as an alt for Mario but...you can make an argument that there was enough Pokemon reps for this game without drowning the roster and because Dr. Mario was considered the strongest of the reps, he was a good choice to come back. As someone who wanted Mewtwo back, I do not mind Dr. Mario. 

4. The Drowining of Mario Reps:

One thing a lot of people noticed is that....there are too many Mario reps. I noticed this since Brawl that I feel like almost 1/4 of the roster is either a Mario character or a Mario spin off character, like Yoshi, the DK reps, and Wario. Plus, the Mario series has almost 6 reps in this game alone! I know Mario is the biggest franchise but, its very distracting. A minor nitpick but it should be a bit fair to also equal the console giants with the handheld giant franchises too

Overall, the final roster has its problems but...I think its ok. As of yet we do not know if Smash will have DLC like Mario Kart 8 or Hyrule Warriors but with what we have, there is an abundance and I look forward to testing this game out next month.

DJAndyMD Asks: Why Does Super Smash Bros Roster Choices Drive People Crazy?

Hey there, its DJAndyMD! Anybody who sees my dashboard might have noticed I responded to a post depicting a question being asked about Lucina being put in for feminists purpose and whining about no Chrom. So, this made me wonder: why do the roster choices in Smash drive people crazy?

Super Smash Bros is a great game dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the heroes, villains, and supporting cast of the franchises that make up Nintendo. Its basically a hall of fame. However, each roster pick comes at a price. What do I mean? Well, when one character gets confirmed.....I keep hearing and seeing the following:

"Ok, where is Mewtwo?"

"Is Ridley next?"

"Why no Ness or Lucas?"

"I want Goku!"

These kinds of posts drive me nuts because I swear that Smash is the only fighting game where each roster choice is met with the dumbest opposition ever! I know most of these are done by trolls and dumb asses but how far is too far in acting like spoiled brats. 

Well, I can easily say that when a new Smash is announced, there will always be new characters added and, like Brawl demonstrated, there may be characters that we have to say goodbye to. Same goes with which veteran characters will return who are not the original lineup. 

Lets start with the veterans shall we?

Funny enough, the veterans get little to no opposition. I will agree that some veterans returning are questionable, like if  in Brawl all clone characters were gone, why keep Falco when he had the same moveset, remove Mewtwo (a non-clone moveset character) and proceed to make clone final smashes or movesets for certain characters? I can see legitimate complaints on this but Smash Wii U/3DS has some questionable returnees. Probably the one that caused the most negative attention was Lucario and I already talked about why he is hated by people and tbh, he is running on fumes at this point. 

This leads to the characters removed from Brawl. Mewtwo is the most popular character to be returning due to its recent popularity and many advertising in Pokemon X and Y. However, Mewtwo is also one of the more annoying complaints from fans. Whenever a character is confirmed, the same post comes up about Mewtwo. When Lucario, Charizard and Greninja was confirmed, why were they hated by some? They wanted Mewtwo back and now his chances are screwed. As a Mewtwo fan myself, I could care less now because, hey, I like Greninja. 

Finally, there are the newcomers, oh boy, the newcomers. I probably have seen more idiotic postings when a newcomer is announced. When Rosalina was announced, I read so many sexist and dumb posts saying that she was not a good character, she sucks because she is a girl. I bet those posters never played Mario Galaxy or they are doing it on purpose. Little Mac had it worst, where people said he sucked without realizing Punch Out was one of the pioneers of the NES' run. Same thing with Pac-Man, people said no one wanted Pac Man without knowing he was the pioneer of videogames.

Either way, I think the main problem is that maybe people expect too much from Smash. For a second, before you post your next Ridley/Mewtwo/Ness/Shulk comment, think of this: If you were given a game where you had to choose the best of the best characters that would appeal to everyone, not just you, everyone....how difficult would choosing the characters be? There will be rejects and winners, but some characters cannot be in everygame. Like I said earlier, if a character is not popular, why subject them when there is nothing more to work with? This actually relates to Ridley because while he is popular in the US, he is not in Japan because Metroid is not a huge deal in Japan. But back to the conclusion, these roster choices must have been hard for Sakurai and Miyamoto as there are many choices but limited space and hardware, its like a play audition, not everybody who auditions will get a part, it sucks but there is always a next time, its not the end. 

Look, I love being a Smash fan, but at times, it drives me crazy when people write sexist comments and make themselves look like entitled arrogant jerks. We need to stop being picky and actually have fun because like Nintendo said: Games are meant to be fun, not taken seriously. Plus, its hypocritical that the same people who complain about roster choices end up having fun with the game and end up playing with the characters they complained about. I should know....I was one of them before.
