It varies, and evolves. Alana has never been devout, but at the same time never had reason to doubt or disbelieve the system they were raised in. At the same time, though, well. The gods are gone, and their fault or not, did not intervene in the various tragedies and crimes the People have suffered. To them, that’s unforgivable, though I’m not sure they’re conscious of this attitude.
A part of Elandrin’s letter comes to mind, too: What care have I for gods I have never seen, for a Maker I do not know? Let others distract themselves with such lofty concerns. I know only this life, I have seen only this world…
With regards to revelations later in the game, this dismissive attitude only turns to…I don’t know of a good word for it. Disillusioned? Though that doesn’t really take into account their rage. It begins with meeting Mythal, seeing for themself how wrapped up in her lofty plans and need for revenge, and what she’s willing to do for what in Alana’s eyes is utter selfishness at the expense of the People, well….
With this in mind, I don’t think what’s revealed in the Crossroads is as much a shock as it could have been had they not met her before? If she’s shit, then so are the rest, right?
TL;DR: Gods are assholes, and if they call you one, that’s a pretty good indicator of how little they think of you.
