Sara
CW: transphobia, implied selfharm and suicidal ideation, violence, death, mentioned vomiting
I didn't have a better idea for my fiction assignment so here is Sara's sort-of biography. The story is after the bigass drawing and under the cut.
Last Goodbye
or, the last moments each Rotling spent at home, with their family.
Lucia/Mexia
Lying on the floor always made her arms hurt after a while, but she didn’t mind. She had to leave soon anyway. Pan Dulce was purring like a fluffy little engine, pushing her head into Lucia’s hand. The TV droned on in the background, playing another episode of Friends, even as Inés slipped away to dreamland. Everything was really looking up. Another payday this week. In a few months, Lucia would have enough saved to get to El Paso and stay a while. To see her family again. Maybe by then she’d regain enough confidence to go back into journalism. She patted Pan Dulce on the head one last time and got up, brushing cat fur off of her dress. She didn’t want to be late. The shelves wouldn’t stock themselves, as her manager said. Inés waved her a sleepy goodbye as she went out the door.
Phillip
“Ma?” Phillip called softly, holding onto the doorframe. She didn’t respond, but he knew she was listening. She never really slept, even when her eyes stayed closed. The room was always dark. Curtains drawn. Staying far from the city outside. “[I’m working late tonight. I’ll order you a pizza].” It happened every Wednesday, but he always reminded her. Just in case. She mumbled a confirmation. “[I’ll see you later, Ma],” he said, letting go of the door and turning back to the hallway. Reminding himself that it wasn’t her fault. That it wasn’t his, either, no matter how pissed off he got. At least he could take his anger out at work. His knife ringing out on the cutting board as he chopped the head off a fish would make things a little better. The dance of working around everyone else didn’t have many steps, but it was better than nothing at all. He tied his shoes and left the house, slamming the door behind him.
Sara
Sara tugged at the collar of her polo, trying to make it lie flat. She couldn’t shake the feeling of dread deep in the pit of her stomach. The sooner she got to work, the better chance she’d have of preventing or fixing whatever was going to happen. “Sara! Wait just a second-“ Anh called from her room. She stuck her head out from the doorway, dressed in pajamas, her hair still wet from the shower. “Hey. I have tomorrow off. Let’s do something to relax.. You’ve been so tired lately,” she said. Sara nodded. It was too early to talk. She still had to grab her coffee cup on her way out. And she didn’t have the time to relax when so much was going on, but she’d do anything for Anh. She just had to keep holding things together in the meantime. She swiped her coffee from the kitchen and slipped out the door, making sure to lock it behind her.
Leon/Sir Loin
“And what the fuck does he mean he’s closing the store?!” Leon snapped, pacing around the room. “If it was going downhill that fast, whatever, but he couldn’t at least tell us? What an idiot, eh?”Sir Pent just hissed in his terrarium, coiling himself into a neat pile. Lucky snake. He didn’t have to worry about holding down a job or making his share of rent. An idea hit him like a brick, and Leon stopped pacing. He turned to face the terrarium, still scowling. “You know what? I’m gonna go down there and give him a piece of my mind. Show him what happens when he fucks his workers over.” Another hiss. Leon grinned, opening the lid and reaching inside to give Sir Pent a few taps on the head. He whispered to the snake that he’d be back soon. It was cold outside, but he wouldn’t be gone long. He rolled down his sleeves, grabbed the keys, and slipped into his work shoes before stepping out into the snow.
Sabina
“[Don’t cause any trouble today].” Sabina spoke seriously, but her eyes crinkled the way they did when she was smiling. She couldn’t hold a frown for too long. Maya nodded obediently, giving Sabina her biggest smile. She let out a laugh as her grandma pulled her into a big hug. “[I love you, Maya],” Sabina whispered. “[I’ll see you when you get home].” She let go, giving Maya one last pat on the shoulder before standing up. Her knees were getting too old for this - she could almost hear her joints cracking. “[I love you too, Granny],” Maya said, that big smile never leaving her face even as she got on the bus and disappeared from view. Tonight something special would happen. She could feel it in her toes. Something exciting waiting for when she got home. Sabina watched the bus drive off before turning in the other direction. Her smile disappeared, giving way to cold determination. The bakery stood locked and silent, but that wouldn’t stop her today. She needed her things back. And she needed a few ingredients to make something important.
Joseph
The sun was out. Warm enough for short sleeves again. Joseph just had to stop in the middle of the path and look up at the sky, admiring the beautiful rays. Such nice weather, he thought to himself. It would be a perfect day for a picnic, even alone. If he didn’t have work to do, anyway. Anthony and Ben hadn’t been convinced yet, but remodeling an entire store was far too much for two men to do on their own. Joseph was old, but he wasn’t useless. And he knew the place better than anyone. He winked at the sun and continued down the path, whistling as he walked. Today would be the day. He just had a feeling.
Reese
It smelled like rain. The sky was overcast. If they walked fast enough, they’d beat the storm to work. But their shoes kept dragging in the grass and they kept kicking rocks. There was always plenty of time for them to get from school to work, but once their shift started it was over too soon. No matter how much they dragged their feet on the walk home, it wasn’t long enough. Reese twisted their fingers together, turning each one this way and that, squeezing their palms until it started to hurt. They didn’t know what they were nervous about. Work was the same as ever. Even after the Incident, their coworkers didn’t act weird around them. Unless they counted Dave always checking in, asking if they were okay. And their answer was always the same. Yeah. Thunder rumbled overhead. Reese forced themself to walk faster. They didn’t want to be caught in mud puddles. They were already wearing their work shoes. If the rain caught up to them before they reached the market, they’d have to mop up their own footprints along with the customers’. They really didn’t know what all their anxiety was for. Nothing was out of the ordinary. It was just another day.
Carol
Quiet mornings were Carol’s favorite. Weekends. When she’d wake up early but not too early to the sun streaming into the bedroom. When Agnes got to the kitchen first and Carol could smell coffee or breakfast from down the hall. The dishes were in the sink, but she and Agnes still sat talking at the table. Her mug was empty. Soon she’d have to leave and face the horrors of the meat shop stinking up the downtown. But until then, she had her moment to relax. To focus on Agnes’s voice, Agnes’s eyes, Agnes’s earrings glittering in the light from the kitchen window. How happy she was to live with such a wonderful woman. Eventually her watch beeped and Agnes had to let go of her hand. They both got up from the table, put their jackets on, and tied their shoes. “We’re catering tonight, so I’ll be home late,” Agnes reminded her as they got in the car. Carol nodded. She’d get a ride home from the butcher shop or walk if she had to. It wouldn’t be a problem. They both winced when the car pulled up to the shuttered store. The smell really did get into everything. It still didn’t stop Carol from kissing Agnes goodbye, whispering into the warm air. “Love you. See you later.”

Left to Rot
PROMPT: Paralyzed / "don't leave me" WHUMPEE: Carol for @leaderwhumpee's whump wheel event CW: head injury, rotting food AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/76385406/chapters/201231211
Carol had never seen something so disgusting. Not in all 25 years of her life. The sheer amount of rotting meat in the place would’ve been off-putting even without the smell.
The smell.
The mask she was wearing wasn’t enough to keep it out. She’d probably need at least a hundred of them. Smelled like dozens of rotting corpses. Like an entire graveyard had been dug up just after the funeral.
She put her earbuds in to try and distract herself with a new book, and was quickly lost in a swashbuckling adventure. Another layer of gloves went on over her sleeves and she got to work in a back corner of the freezer, trying to stack the rotting piles for the skid loader. Picking up some of the meat falling out of burst packages. And trying to breathe a little less. It was definitely a good thing Agnes had to work today. The atmosphere was anything but romantic.
Some of the meat, piled on a thick, sturdy set of shelves, was stuck together in a glob too big for her to pick up. Standing on her tiptoes, she pulled and scraped at it, doing her best to separate the packages. She gritted her teeth, reaching a little higher to grab the top one, and it was then that the whole shelf shifted and began to fall.
There wasn’t a second to think. The shelf and all the meat it was holding toppled on top of Carol, pinning her down so she couldn’t move. Her head hit the floor hard, but not loud enough to be heard over the skid loader’s engine.
The world turned to darkness. She was still falling.
“You knocked over a shelf!” a man yelled, pointing to where the meat had fallen. The older man on the skid loader just shrugged.
“All of that had to be moved anyway. We can take care of it later, once we finish this section.”
When Carol opened her eyes again, she couldn’t see. It was too dark. Too fuzzy.
She could still smell the rotting meat, but it wasn’t as bad as before. Somehow. Maybe she’d gotten used to it.
Something heavy was covering her. She tried to move it, but she couldn’t lift her arms. Couldn’t wiggle her fingers. She couldn’t feel her limbs at all.
There was no sound either. Where were the other volunteers? They couldn’t have gone already, unless she fell asleep somehow and none of them noticed.
She tried to open her mouth, to yell in the hopes that someone would hear her, but her whole body had no feeling. If it worked, she didn’t know.
A maggot crawled onto her nose and rested there, enjoying the warmth of her breath. She could see a little more now. She was almost entirely covered in packages of rotting meat, their juices dribbling onto her hazmat suit. A metal shelf kept her down, probably the reason she couldn’t move. It was still dark. Must be night. Was everyone else really gone?
Come back.
Maybe if she wished hard enough, she could talk right into someone’s head. Maybe she could will telepathy to be real.
Please come back.
Someone had to be there. They couldn’t have just left her. Someone had to have noticed that she didn’t go home or come out for lunch break.
Come back and get me out of here..
There was no way they’d leave without everyone being accounted for.
Right?
Please come back. Don’t leave me here. Please. Don’t just leave.

PROMPT: hypothermia WHUMPEE: Leon (Sir Loin) for @leaderwhumpee's whump wheel event CW: swearing AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/76385406/chapters/202490876 ☣️ yeah this one sucks but at least i wrote something
Everyone loves a good scream in the walk-in.
Leon had punched the wall over and over until his knuckles cracked and his hand hurt so much the fingers wouldn’t move. His breath came out in clouds, too full of energy for the cold to reach him.
There was so much meat left on the shelves. For a place that was closed, it sure didn’t look like it. Maybe that’s why he still had his keys. Why the email he and his coworkers got just said “no need to show up anymore”.
The sound bubbled up out of his chest and he screamed again, clenching his hands into fist and ignoring the pain.
”FUCK YOU!!!”
No job. With no warning. And no reason. Just that the store would be gone. But here he was, in a freezer still full of meat, swearing at the cold metal walls. As if that would do anything.
He should be at home looking for more jobs. Sir Pent needed company. He should be applying to all the shitty factories while Sir Pent watched Law & Order on his shoulder. Everything would be fine, he thought, wincing as he tried to stretch out his fingers.
Fucking idiot. Whatever. He could probably fix it at home. Hospitals disgusted him.
He took in a long breath of cold air, then reached for the door. Except. What the fuck?!
The safety handle wasn’t there. How long had that been going on? Wouldn’t surprise him if the owner had been up to some shady bullshit. Leon and his coworkers had been wiping sludge and mold off the ingredients from time to time, so anything else..
He kicked the door. Didn’t move. Locked from the outside. Kicked it again, nothing moved. Fucking stupid door.
Gritting his teeth, he threw his entire body weight against the door. Nothing happened but the stupid fucking metal kind of hurt to run into.
Just his luck. Maybe they’d find his body in a few days. Someone had to come clear out this meat eventually. Send it to some other butcher shop over in Quebec, probably.
Fucking stupid. If he ever got out of this damn freezer he’d take the meat for himself. Go find the owner and beat the shit out of him. Something like that. He was getting out, of course he was. The place had to be taken care of. (There were barrels of meat in the back that would smell bad as soon as the weather warmed up. Of course they wouldn’t be left.)
Or maybe if he kept at the door, he’d break it open. Maybe someone would hear the commotion.
So keep at the door he did, kicking and hitting it until he was out of breath and had to sit down.
He wasn’t going to die here. Not in this shitty butcher shop.
Not without seeing Sir Pent again.
He hit the door again with his bad hand. Again. Again. If he didn’t think about it, he wouldn’t feel the pain. If he didn’t feel it, maybe a finger would freeze and break off, and he could use it to break the door open or something.
But nothing happened.
The cold made it numb, and nothing else.
He lay down on the cold floor, staring up at the shelves of meat. He couldn’t think of a reason for it to still be up there.
Maybe he was dreaming, and that was why. His mind just couldn’t produce a picture of the freezer being empty. Or maybe he was on the couch watching some crazy show where the criminal was hiding in a freezer and the cops were keeping him in there to get a confession.
He closed his eyes, willing himself to wake up. The floor was so cold it hurt. Maybe he should’ve worn a coat or something. Gloves. Better socks.
Despite his nickname, he’d make a terrible sirloin.
He opened his eyes again. All the meat was still there. He’d exhausted himself trying to get the door open. Getting up again felt pointless. He would probably die in here anyway. How many days had it been since he got the email? Or had it been weeks? Everything in here should’ve been gone by now. If it wasn’t taken yet, would it be taken at all?
Maybe he was dreaming. It was just a really weird dream. Maybe the way to get out was make things weirder.
He sat up on his knees and reached for the shelves, knocking the meats to the floor around him. When he couldn’t reach any more he shook the shelf, doing his best to bring the rest down. One hit him in the head and he laughed. Was that weird enough?
Another landed in his lap. He gave the shelf one last shake and lay back down, letting the meat surround him. He was probably the biggest sirloin in the whole shop. Whoever got him butchered would have a tough time storing all that meat, eh?
It got harder to keep his eyes open. The dream must be almost over, he thought. Soon he’d wake up on the couch and the credits would be rolling. Sir Pent would be hissing for a snack. Something like that.
It was all so funny. The longer he thought about it, the more he was sure he was laughing. Maybe it was a sitcom instead of a cop show. Something like that too.
Did it really matter?
He was about to wake up. The light in his living room was so bright. Even with his eyes closed.
And they didn’t open again until everything started to thaw and the mold crept in.
