I’m in a mild fight with my Dutch father because he’s insisting that ‘rot op’ means ‘rascal’ or is a similar kind of teasing scolding term/noun for a mischievous person (usually a child or adolescent) and that’s how it’s always been used in my family. He says his parents used it in that way. (He also says it’s spelled ‘rot ap’.) My dad’s family emigrated when he was five years old, so his grasp of the Dutch language is, shall we say, not exactly up-to-the-minute. My grandparents spoke a great deal in Dutch to one another, but wanted their children to pick up English as well and quickly as possible, so I understand it wasn’t enforced much at home as my dad, aunts, and uncle were growing up. Everything I am Googling is telling me something very different and much less kid-friendly/grumblingly affectionate but my dad is refusing to believe me when I tell him it’s more like a verb/request/demand and leaning towards rather rude.

Help me, @krulllenbol, you’re my only hope.
