#rothko myth busting

Not sure if users keep doing this or online poster sites or whatever but this is a ridiculously bright push on this painting. Lighting conditions can be doifferent as I drone on about all the time, but that's not what this is. The whole feeling of this work is surprising because of how dark it is, but someone wants to turn it into a bright painting. Why?

I saw this post today of Earth and Green, a nice Mark Rothko painting, but in the version that you usually see, it was the first one I saw too, it is flipped left to right.

So the proper orientation would be below

This always seems to be a bot posting account but it also always photoshops the paintings to look brighter, which looks dumb and probably comes from some poster junk online place, because there are a lot of fakes too

This person's bad habit of Photoshopping these paintings gets on my last nerve. Every time there's a saturation thing and it's so unnecessary

A gentle reminder, that if you see this photograph it is not a photograph of Mark Rothko's studio, but rather the set of a play. It's used even by big art accounts, frankly because they're lazy and not doing any research, but it's been floating around forever.

If you scrutinize it you can see there's some problems including that not very good painting in foreground which I suppose it's supposed to look like it's being worked on, but wouldn't really resemble one of his real paintings even if it was.

Anyway just another cautionary statement about what's real and what's not

I've cropped out the person's name who posted this because it's no slight on them that they did. It's the most popular picture of Rothko on the Internet. However, there is no color version of this photograph there are only many different Photoshop versions of the same colorized photograph. This painting is orange not red.

It would be great to stop posting this mangled photo

This pink version is still photoshopped no matter how many times someone posts it

The real one is on the right. A better scan will come this year and I will post it, but don't fall for the nonsense where people change paintings to suit their "Aesthetic"
