CFB1 – round 2: Critically annotate an online dossier of artists 30%

VIVIANE SASSEN is a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam. I like her photography style in particular. Her style of photography is quite unique, weird and aesthetic. Sassen’s art skill is excellent. She prefer drawing on her prints and re-photographing these pictures. You could see in these photos I posted, some of photos were drawn and added pigment by her, enhancing the perceptions of shape.

I don't like drawing on the pictures actually because I think it might destroy the beauty of photos. But when I saw Sassen’s works, I don’t think so. The lines adding pigment on the photos make the photos look more mysterious and her drawing always can catch my eyes. The combination of her drawing and the picture is very harmonious, as if it is a whole and it will not make me feel abrupt. The photographer also makes full of the model’s mood as well as gesture. The series of photos are really creative and they are an exploration of the aesthetic potential.

オランダ人フォトグラファー、ヴィヴィアン・サッセン（Viviane Sassen）の作品集。作家と彼女のミューズであるロクサーヌ（Roxane）は、前作「ROXANE」に続き本書においても二人によるコラボレーションによって作られたビジュアルジャーナルを綴る。躍動感のあるポーズやムードを用い、時に官能的で、また時に脆さを魅せる世界観を描く。どのイメージにおいても、カメラの眼前と裏側で行われるパフォーマンス描写が特徴として表されており、たとえばカメラの前に写りこんだ影は作家の存在を示唆し、また胸を押し付けて作られた跡が残る紙には、その行為を目に見える形で表現している。この作品は彼女たち二人の共通のポートレイトであり、アーティストとモデルのやり取りの中でそれぞれの個が曖昧になっていき、お互いの上にお互いの痕跡を残していく過程が写し出されている。別の作品集「UMBRA」でコラボレートしたオランダ人アーティスト、詩人のマリア・バルナス（Maria Barnas）は、本作品を紹介する詩の中でこう表現する。「自分自身にちらりと目をやり、はっと息をのむ。色彩や雲が口から立ち上り、その中に広がっていく私たちの姿が見える。それはあなた達のもの？それとも、私のものなのだろうか。」
