Edward blew up his chances of ever having a respectable career. It wouldn’t be so bad really, but his dad is a prick and his little brother clearly chose him over Ed. 

So he ran away, and now he is trying to make a life for himself in his mom’s old house by screaming at the plants until the magically grow.

Local sadman, Roy Mustang, takes one look at this unhappy stranger and decides he deserves better.
