“No…my past is…never going to leave me completely.” Hallow replied, his voice almost a whisper. “The Moon had me keep my memories, just within reach but never at the front of my mind. And besides that, there are only a couple of gaps. I suppose you are right - about that being helpful in understanding.” Hallow’s own lips quirked as he recalled Jocelyn’s smile again, but he quickly fell back into his somber gaze. “Not quite in the way one might think, though. I’d say…it helps me understand that Mr. Moon is clever, if nothing else.” Hallow wrapped his arms around himself.
“I don’t want to be right about this, but…it feels like keeping my memories is supposed to be a reminder, held over my head. I am sure the Moon isn’t bad, but he has to protect his own, right? So I can never forget what I am or where I came from, and why even after all that, I could still have a chance because hegave me one.” A bitter half-smirk twisted Hallow’s mouth. “At least, that’s what I understand from him now. He’s never taken the time to prove me wrong; neither has anyone else.”
“You know, Jocelyn…I’m…” Hallow dug his nails into the spine of the book now. “I’m sorry for stalling. I’m sorry for dodging questions and being vague. I don’t…I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to just say what I want.” He took a sharp breath and bit the inside of his lip.
“You can clearly see I’m a spirit, not a human - but the truth is, I never was one. I was never supposed to live a full human life, and I was never supposed to… be “good”.”

To hear him say that his past would never leave him completely, Jocelyn was inevitably reminded of her own experience. Sure, theirs were two completely different paths, but still, it was easy to sympathize with him, with what she had gone through herself.
"He does that, doesn't he?" Jocelyn commented, voice slow and measured, crossing her arms over her chest. All this talk was igniting old suspicions, doubts she tried not to think about, but never quite able to let go, not without a proper answer.
The spirit waved his apology away, offering a small smile to ease the tension. If that even worked at all. "I don't understand, though. What proof do you need? And.. and, well, some of the Guardians are never human, ever, that's not a bad thing, Hallow.." And in her personal opinion, there was no such thing as 'not supposed to be good', if you want to be good then why the hell not? Jocelyn had no idea how to ask this, however, so she kept quiet, expectant to his next words.
