Class Discussion

The miss representation video was so good to watch because as young girls growing up we do not realize how our environment shapes our minds and it honestly made me so sad to see the young high school girls talk about how they had to deal with their own experiences. Another topic I found to be interesting was the Sarah Palin being seen as the “wife” figure and Hilary Clinton being shown as the emotional one. It goes to show how the media can make or break someone especially when it’s for their own benefit. I just hope that it will get better because we as well as our future daughters, cousins and nieces need to know that they are more than just their “virtue” and their purpose on this earth is not to please a man or to get a husband unless if thats what they choose for themselves.

The Plenary

The best part about the the plenary was the interviews. The first one with the young lady who died at the age of 15 by a gang and hearing her family crying in the background was devastating. Young girls go through so much and it scares me because it could honestly happen to any of us. The other interview was with the young lady who had to take care of her baby and could not handle it. It’s just so sad to know that we live in America and their are still so many people living in poverty. It was so nice to hear about that man who gave bottled water to those who needed it the most

Second Plenary

I know this was only the second plenary, but I can say it was the best one yet. I really admired Wendy Cai-Lee because she is powerful to me. I loved that she moved here at a young age because I did as well and there’s a lot of pressure to do good because you’re not only working hard for yourself, but your also your family. I loved the fact that she was not afraid to take chances at such a young age and how she was honest when she simply did not know how to answer the questions being asked. The other topic I liked was when she talked about being a mother vs. having a career. It is hard to be a woman sometimes because we live in a world where we as women have to constantly choose between the two.

In Class reading/lecture

Last week during class we talked about intersectionality and how it can sometimes hinder or help us as women in this world today. We also did a class activity where some of us shared a lot of our experiences. We also did a reading called “A letter to my daughter” by Si Wai Anderson and she wrote about her experiences in being adopted and how it affected her life growing up and also how she was proud to have a daughter because she did miss out on certain experiences with her biological mother.

The reading that I found most interesting was by Lee how to suppress the apology because I realized that yes i’m not the only one feeling this way and it gave me a chance to listen to everyones experiences and how they feel. We all have something we wish we could change about ourselves

lauren’s Plenary

The seminar was extremely eye opening because most of the information she talked about I did not know about. As I got older I started to think about abortion and how it really affects because I would always say why get an abortion when you can have a baby, but being young I looked at a child as being an accessory. Then I started asking my sister questions about the subject and although I didn’t fully agree with the whole “yea it doesn’t count as a baby”, I finally started to come to terms with it. I do believe that women should have the decision to do what they want with their bodies because no man should have that much power over any of us. We are people and we deserve so much better. women are more than just baby making objects. The fact that she helps volunteer in the clinics is so great.
