Socially Responsible Fashion
These days a lot of companies seem to be cashing in on the idea of being socially responsible, but there are a few companies out there who actually care about the rest of world and not just their bottom line. Quiksilver has their own Organic Cotton T-shirt line like so many others, but beyond sustainability there is a void in the industry to support those who are really in need. In this globalized world we live in the role of our influence is more important than ever and that is the story these companies are trying to tell.
Industry: high-end retail
Demographic: young professionals
Owners: Shae and Ran Parton
Philosophy: "The most valuable practice in creating lasting change is by investing in people."
In 2004 we created Apolis with a simple idea that people can live better lives if they are given equal access to opportunity. Our travels abroad immersed us in personal stories of struggle and survival that inspired us to create a business model that bridges commerce and sustainable development. A model which we call advocacy through industry. Along with our commitment to global advocacy, we also understand the importance of sourcing and manufacturing locally. An average of sixty percent of our product assortment is made in the United States and each of the manufacturers we partner with are part of our goal to empower people through opportunity instead of charity.

Industry: mid-range retail
Demographic: socially aware young adults
Owner: Blake Mycoski
Philosophy: "Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk. We need to help these children."
In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers. Look out for their new eyewear soon to be released to the public.
Industry: outdoor clothing and gear
Demographic: outdoor enthusiasts
Owner: Yvon Chouinard
Philosophy: "Produce top-quality products while doing the least possible harm to the environment."
Starting in Ventura, California owner Yvon Chouinard reinvented modern rock climbing with his original designs in climbing technology. Yvon translated this into clothing and apparel and soon found his company doing about $260 million in sales(2010). The unique company culture believes that in order to think outside the box sometimes you need to get out of the cubicle. Offering employees a two month paid sabbatical to work for an environmental group and paying for part of college expenses are some of the ways Yvon rewards his employees and the Earth. Also, you can return Patagonia items and they will not only recycle the material but also give you a discount on your next purchase. Score! Sustainable materials and a commitment to preserving the environment showcase this company's innovative approach to fashion.
