The clock ticks, and when Rune turns to look at it, it still says eleven, barely ten minutes after he’d looked at it last time.
He’s almost done, just needs to pour the chocolate into the molds and wait for it to cool down. It gives him enough time to prepare the wrappers he’d gotten earlier.
He turns the stove’s flame off and takes the pot off of it, giving it one more stir before turning to the other side of the counter where he’d set out the forms, all ready.
Except he doesn’t get there.
Rune bumps into something and his balance is lost, causing him to drop both the pot and the spatula. They hit the floor with a clang and a thud respectively. The chocolate goes flying, landing all over Erblu’s front. The taller man looks stunned, blinking down at Elsword while splotches of chocolate paint his pale cheeks.
“Hi,” he says smartly.
“Ah—!” Rune panics, reaching for a napkin to wipe off Mochi’s shirt and face. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
As Rune wipes at Ain’s cheek, trying to get the chocolate off, Erblu smiles and pulls the hand away, giving the redhead a lopsided grin. “What are you doing, Elsword?”
“Ah—” Rune’s face goes pink and he leans down to pick up the pot and spatula and put them away, if only to hide the blush for a second more. “I was making chocolate,” he admits.
“Oh! Oh, I see! I’m sorry, I made you drop it,” Erblu apologizes, brows knit together in guilt, “That reminds me, here.”
He holds out a heart shaped, pink box with a golden ribbon. Rune takes it and finds chocolate bonbons when he opens it.
“Are these…?”
“From Ms. Magician,” Mochi says, “She told me to give it to you.”
Rune exhales the breath he didn’t even know he’d been holding. “Oh.” Even though it’s barely a single word, it carries all of his disappointment. He places the box onto the counter. “I’m sorry about before, Erblu. If you want, I can clean your clothes later.”
“That’s okay, Elsword. Also,” the gray haired man holds out another, smaller box. This one is red and says pralines in bold letters. “Here, these are from me.”
Rune’s shoulders go stiff and his heart starts beating in his chest so hard he fears Mochi can hear it.
“Ms. Magician told me that today is the day you give sweets to the ones you like,” Mochi mumbles, placing a hand to his chin as he thinks about the weirdness of this human tradition. “I didn’t understand why it’s only one day, however. Shouldn’t you give the people you like things more often than once a year? That Mr. Half-Demon has the right idea for once, with how many cookies he bakes for the Demon.”
“Lu asks for those, though.”
“And anyway, isn’t it stupid to only gift sweets?” Ain continues, pointedly ignoring Elsword’s comment about Lu. “What if someone doesn’t like sweets? So that’s why I also got you this…”
Erblu digs into his pocket and pulls out something small, handing it over. Rune could recognize the shape anywhere; it’s a hilt guard, peculiarly forged and tinted the same shade of gray as his sword’s hilt.
“Thank you, Mochi,” Rune says, pulling the accessory to his chest. The fact that Erblu had gotten him anything, and the fact that he even went as far as to get him something in case he didn’t like the chocolates, it fills his chest with warmth and stomach with butterflies.
“You don’t have to thank me! This human festivity just has has many flaws,” Mochi points out.
“I was going to also give you chocolate,” Rune admits quietly, looking away as his cheeks flush even further. “But I spilled it, so how about we share this?”
The redhead holds up the red box he’d gotten from Ain, and Ain shakes his head. “That’s yours.” With a finger, he scoops a bit of the chocolate spilled on his top and pops it into his mouth. “It’s really good!”
His smile is wide and his eyes too bright for someone who had a whole pot worth of chocolate spilled on them. Rune’s heart, erratic as it is, skips a beat at the sight of it.
“Thank you, Elsword!”
“Don’t thank me! I spilled it all over you!”
“It’s fine, you went through all the trouble of making it for me, and it’s great. So, thank you, Rune.”
Rune’s already red cheeks darken, and he ducks his head to hide them with his bangs. “I’ll— I’ll just make you proper ones.”
