Run the Jewels 4, Run the Jewels (2020)
Imagine an album by Run the Jewels that isn’t a storming fucking cacophony of expertly-assembled, outstandingly-performed hip hop tunes. I can’t and, clearly, neither can Killer Mike and El-P. They have never dropped the bar, two of the most impressive rappers of the past twenty years. RTJ4 is another top-tier work of hardcore, political and experimental hip hop that never breaks pace in a way that only Run the Jewels can.

LISTEN BELOW
Run the Jewels has officially provided us with the soundtrack for the revolution that we are embarking upon. If you’re familiar with the group, you would know that this release and its content is not coincidental, this is the music that they’ve been making for years and the message hasn’t changed. Now, more people are likely willing to hear it. The release came earlier in the week ahead of #NewMusicFriday and right on time. As I was doing my listen, about halfway through, this song came on. The production caught my attention as El-P leads the track off then I hear a familiar voice. No one was listed on the track listing as featured but I know my girl Gangsta Boo’s voice when I hear it. It was a nice pleasant surprise though her contribution was small. I’m a fan of what #RTJ does so I would have bet money that I was going to like the project. If you don’t want to hear raw and uncomfortable realities, then this is probably not the album for you. For those that do, they’ve done it yet again.

Outside of a few year-end lists,it’s very odd how we haven’t written about Run The Jewels very much. But with how Run The Jewels 3’s release feels like forever ago, it is time to change that up. Now a word of caution here: there is no correct way to listen to these three albums. You can listen to Run The Jewels, then Run The Jewels 2, and then Run The Jewels 3 in sequential order…
