Ruben Young - “Rachel Green” | Northside Sessions
For Ruben Young, inspiration comes in spades. It can be heard in his sound which draws breath from Marvin Gaye and Modern Mura Masa, as well as in his standout single “Rachel Green,” an ode to the Friends ‘90s dream girl made famous by Jenifer Aniston.
It was our pleasure to invite this rising modern soul artist to Toronto to perform his standout single “Rachel Green” at our latest Northside Sessions. And be sure to stick around as we sit down with Young to talk about his debut EP, Dreamstate, his writing process, and what the future holds.

the world seems to be on a “Friends” kick right now.
the nostalgia is real as the hit TV series nears its 25th birthday. iconic images from the show are popping up on clothes, in Buzzfeed articles and in countless memes and GIFs.
Canadian R&B singer Ruben Young even captures his boyhood desires about the iconic character in his newest single. he croons about his dream girl over a sexy beat, along with a nice verse from Odd Future’s Hodgy.
even better, the music video (see below) features memorable Rachel moments from the show, with Young’s face superimposed over her co-stars.
let’s be honest... we all had a crush on Rachel, right?
Ruben Young finds himself in the grips of a ‘Golden Hell’ on his latest single.
Produced by Montreal’s The Lost Boys, the Canadian singer fuels his self-doubt into shimmering, powdery beats and sombre bass grooves, diffusing the tension with his honeyed vocals.
As Young says about the track via press release:
‘The road to gold is scary as hell. It ain't for everyone.
‘While travelling and writing for my record late last summer, I rode a wave of stress that made me feel like I was losing perspective on both my career and path in life.
‘“Golden Hell” is the next step into my dream state. It’s a journey, true to its inspiration, speckled with moments of etherealism, lust, tension, and chaos – just like the path we all walk.’
In 2017, the singer released three independent singles, resulting in over two million streams and scoring him opening slots for the likes of Akon, Classified, Nelly and The Chainsmokers. His most recent track, ‘Rachel Green,’ saw him collab with Odd Future’s Hodgy, which, of course, was dedicated to Young's 90's TV dream girl.
Looks like the path is pretty golden at the moment for Ruben Young...

Take Her Down - Ruben Young
"Ain’t no cure nothing left to save,
Go ahead and prove me wrong again
Pull me close into another lie
Get me high, baby get me high
Then let me down like you always do
You’re a mess but I’m a fool for you"
