sol and ruby's relationship is like if you tried to take a cat to the vet and the cat absolutely freaks the fuck out and starts shrieking in plain english about how it is an INDEPENDENT CREATURE with AUTONOMY who will NOT BE DEGRADED IN THIS WAY while also, like, trying to claw your face off. and you're like joke's on you kittycat. i know you speak english because you already asked me to take you to the vet. and you told me you'd freak in This Exact Way. and the cat is like I DID NO SUCH THING I WOULD NEVER. hmm--in the kidnapping au, maybe sol helps ruby get out w/baby lily? sort of as a parallel to ruby helping sol survive robert. sol doesn't like kids and doesn't really want to be around lily (or starlight, if she knows about him). but she wants her ruby to be happy more than anything, even if it means leaving her

this is the only way i can see them having an out... although sol prison breaking ruby would be Pretty Difficult. if sol DID manage to get both ruby and lily out, i imagine she'd have to either run with them or die immediately. too many cameras and too many people knowing where she is to get away with it

sol running with both ruby and lily (and starlight if he's in tachni) is very funny. i think she'd be largely fine with lily but starlight is Just young enough and cheerful enough to ping her NO!!! NO KIDS sensors. she's like oh my god keep that Thing away from me. <-that "thing" is one year younger than the girl sol talks to like a grown-ass adult, for better or for worse....

the biggest possible sacrifice would be if sol had to rescue ruby's kids WITHOUT ruby. devin like "so there's this one woman who can help but she's going to be terrible to you" and lily's like "pshaaw, nobody can be worse than nova" & then lily meets sol and is like "indeed. you are not worse than nova. however. Girl???"

i'm not sure which one is worse...

i honestly think devin would respond to this knowledge with "haha, universe! you can't fool me. my terrible wife would never follow her dreams and you cannot trick me into thinking she would."

meanwhile i think ruby would actually take enormous comfort in the idea that somewhere there's a version of sol and her who are okay. this might be sadder than just being sad.

if you need me i'll be falling in love with the woman who nursed me back to health from my yellow wallpaper madness and then handing her all the tools to enact the same violence against me as my righteously-murdered husband because i don't trust myself (i am mad) but i do trust her to save others from me, even if it means locking me back in the attic. i'll also be being a huge bitch about it.

you mentioned ruby is like. Arguably a "Very Highly Functional" alcoholic. how does sol feel about it? does she know? does she feel any weird neurotic resentment/fear/worry about ruby drinking considering how she feels about anything that messes with her head?

for sol to feel any type of way about it, ruby would have to be pretty overt about her drinking, which she isn't. she just happens to have a few glasses of wine on the nights when she's reasonably sure she doesn't need to be "on call." she doesn't let herself get outwardly anxious or tetchy when unable to have said wine, she doesn't binge drink herself into a coma, and she doesn't make it a core facet of her personality.

the fastest way to worry people when you have an addiction is by trying to hide it OR by being super obvious about it. ruby consumes alcohol in socially acceptable ways according to socially acceptable routines with no apparent consequences. if sol was worried about it, then sol would Also be worried about anybody who ever drinks casually, which.... she simply is not.
