Can you do some headcanons for when ruby is examining violets eyes and she’s asking her questions about them to figure out the state of them and vi answers a few before she just breaks down because it finally hits her that she won’t ever be able to see anything again and ruby comforts her
STOP my heart okay I’ll do it
“Can you see when I do this?”
Ruby waved a finger in front of Violet’s left eye.
A gentle wiggle back and forth.
Violet squinted, and blinked, and sighed.
“No.”
Ruby rubbed her hands together. “It’s okay, that’s not the eye I’m worried about.”
Violet raised an eyebrow. “Because it’s a goner?”
Ruby choked on her breath and cleared her throat.
Violet knew that was a yes.
“Your other eye just seems clearer, that’s all.” Ruby said.
Violet knew she was only trying to make her feel better.
She didn’t think it was working.
“Farther along the road to recovery.”
She was trying, and Violet gave her that.
Ruby wiggled her finger the same way in front of her right eye.
Not saying anything.
And Violet didn’t react.
“Ruby?” She finally called.
Ruby froze.
“Are you gonna continue?”
The pit in Ruby’s stomach grew.
“Can you see this?” She asked.
And wiggled again.
Violet squinted.
Hard.
As if fighting with her eyes to open their curtains.
She sighed.
Her shoulders collapsed.
“No.”
Ruby frowned.
And turned to her medical supplies.
She heard sniffling.
And she thought nothing of it.
Everyone’s immune system was down.
And everyone was getting sick lately.
She reached for tissues to offer to her.
She heard more sniffles.
And turned.
Just as she did, Violet cracked.
Her face contorted.
Her eyes squeezed shut.
Her chest fell inward.
And she shattered.
Ruby froze, not wanting to overstep her bounds.
Her sobs raised.
And her body quaked.
He chest collapsed onto her knees.
And her teeth rattled open.
And she wailed.
It was a sound Ruby had never heard before.
And it was a sound she prayed she would never need to hear.
She abandoned the tissues on the floor and lunged.
“Violet? Vi?”
Violet yelled.
Her voice contorting through each sob.
“I can’t see you,” she sobbed.
The words forced out around each pained scream.
Her hands shielded her face.
The base of her palms jabbing into the eyes she wished weren’t there.
Having holes in her face would feel better.
They wouldn’t be sitting there.
Useless.
A reminder of what she once had.
“I can’t see anything,”
Ruby could feel pity well in her throat.
But it was more than just pity.
It was pain.
It was agony.
Violet was the strongest person she knew.
And through forces she couldn’t control, she was shattered.
Terrified, shaken, lost.
She felt broken, even if Ruby didn’t see her that way.
“It’s gonna be okay, Vi.” Ruby said, voice wavering.
Her soul cracking as hers snapped.
“Everything’s different now,” Violet wailed.
Rubbing her palms out of her eyes.
Letting Ruby peer into the fog.
“If anyone can do this, it’s you, Vi.” She hushed.
And Violet blinked, tears rolling down her scars.
Ruby reached back and snagged tissues.
And slipped one into her hands.
Cupping her palms around hers.
Keeping one for herself.
Violet reached up and brushed at her cheeks.
Avoiding her scars.
While Ruby mirrored.
“I’m not that strong,” she hushed.
Her nose was stuffy.
“Look at me,” she sighed.
Ruby gave a sad smile, one she knew Violet couldn’t see.
But Violet could feel it.
“You’re mourning the loss of something important,” Ruby said. “That doesn’t make you weak.”
Violet scoffed.
And brushed at her eye again.
“What makes you strong is that despite it, you keep pushing forward.”
Violet removed her tissue.
And stared forward.
Knowing all she saw was vastness.
She pictured Ruby’s brilliant smile.
Beaming through the room.
Illuminating every dark spot in Violet’s chest.
“You believe that?”
Ruby smiled.
And set a hand on her knee.
And Violet could feel her sunlight enter her.
“I know that, Vi. Because I know you.”
Violet sat.
And stared at her.
Because even though she couldn’t see, she could.
She could picture Ruby there.
Her kindness surpassed her obstacles.
Because she could feel her warmth.
And sense her light.
And taste the kindness of her words.
And Violet started tearing up again.
And rain rolled down from her fog clouds.
And she could hear Ruby gasp at the thunder.
“I’m sorry Vi, I didn’t mean to upset you.” She breathed.
