Description of the arena: The 83rd Arena is spread across the large, mostly empty concrete floors of a three-story warehouse. Scattered throughout the cavernous rooms are piles of wooden boxes and machinery with rusted gears that appears not to have been operative in years. The Cornucopia is not open but rather, is a pile of wooden boxes in the center of the first floor. Once the gong sounds, it’s up to the tributes to pry open the boxes with their hands before accessing any of the treasures inside.
The Career pack is strong from the outset, with all six of the tributes from One, Two, and Four being in sync, having worked together in training. The two from One break open the boxes as Mariana and the other Careers pick off half of the tributes during an exceptionally deadly Bloodbath, using broken wood from the boxes as weapons.
The Career pack takes over the Cornucopia, which now consists of the pried open boxes, weapons, broken wood, and food scattered on the floor. The other tributes scramble, most of them taking refuge on another level of the warehouse. It’s possible to climb to the second and third level via a set of stairs or a ladder inside the elevator shaft; the elevator is inoperative and stuck in between the second and third floors.
The first afternoon, the building is pumped with noxious gas and the Career pack nearly chokes to death before the District 2 male discovers a box in the corner containing gas masks. Several tributes on other floors who weren’t lucky enough to find the masks succumb to asphyxiation.
The second day, Mariana sees that one of the tributes has hidden in the bottom of the elevator shaft. She takes the stairs to the third story and, using a saw from the Cornucopia, saws the cables. The elevator falls, and the tribute is dead.
Shortly after, there is a loud, horrible grinding sound throughout the warehouse. The machinery has come to life and begun to operate, moving across the floor with spinning blades and deadly metal gears that threaten to slash or crush tributes in their way. Mariana saves the other Careers by wedging an axe into one of the gears, effectively stopping the erratic machine.
The viewers and Gamemakers alike are bloodthirsty for more killing, and the Career Pack has grown antsy, still five strong. The third morning in the Arena, Mariana feels the impatience in the air and chokes the District One female to death before she can wake. It is a cowardly way to kill, and she steals away before the fluorescent lights come on above, signaling a manufactured dawn. The Career Pack is finished. Mariana is on her own. She climbs the elevator shaft to the third floor.
The remaining tributes not part of the Career Pack are picked off one by one. The District Seven male makes the mistake of coming across Mariana. He is disposed of. She waits, evading the other Careers, until, on the third day, the four remaining tributes are trapped on the same floor: the stairs and elevator shaft both disappear. It’s a fight to the death, and Mariana allows the others to do her dirty work before swooping in and killing the last remaining tribute: her District Partner.
