If you write Supernatural Fanfic…
… and you’re writing a scene in which the boys are driving the Impala at night down some dark road towards the Bad Guys, be sure NOT TO DO what the showrunners did all the time. Namely this:
Dean: “Are we getting closer?”
Sam: “Yeah. I think I see the house way, way up ahead. Turn off the headlights, we’ll TAKE THEM BY SURPRISE.”
Dean: *shuts off lights*
The Impala’s engine: “RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE”
Sam: “Yup. They’ll never know we’re coming.”
The Impala (rolling its metaphorical eyes): “RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE…”
Believe me when I tell you that you can hear that car’s engine, even when coasting down the road at 2 miles an hour, from a thousand feet away. It constantly drove me crazy when I was watching Supernatural and they did this, because I have a bunch of classic car owning friends, and their cars have engines smaller than that Impala, and I can hear my friends cruising down my street from inside my house when they come to visit as soon as they’re like 800 feet away. The Supernatural Sound Editors must have constantly rolled their eyes as they muted the sound of the car in those scenes.
Anyway. Make sure the boys turn off the car’s ENGINE as well as the headlights, and cruise downhill to the bad guys. Then they might actually surprise them, Sam, you dumbass.
