I am once again mourning the defunction of Voltage Lovestruck.

I have never once in my life considered using my own money to pay for more content, save for this game.

This game sparked my love for visual novels, let me explore my sexuality in a safe environment when I was still deeply closeted, and gave some **damn** good stories to read.

From late 2016 to early 2021, I never tired of it.

Queen of Thieves, Gangsters in Love, Sweet Enchantments. They were my favorite settings to explore romantic dynamics and learn what parts were healthy or toxic, and what I would inevitably be into.

Gods, I adore this game still, even though it's been defunct for nearly 4 years.

RIP Voltage Lovestruck, if only I could play you once again.

I was looking back through runa's tag on tumblr and it's actually comical how much of my "shit I would spend the next five years unpacking in therapy" I put into her route. A lot of stuff around being afraid of anger, a lot of stuff about anger and a destructive and a liberatory force, a lot of stuff about the way that self-hatred can ruin your life by making you lash out at other people, a lot of stuff about how toxic the fear of vulnerability is. Like I look at these screenshots and I just have to laugh. Legitimately hilarious how on-the-nose it is and how unconscious that was at the time.

And like, I'm never gonna stop wishing that more of this had been planned, that the production team had had a clear idea of what runa's story would be from the start, rather than stumbling into this issue without recognising how much it would antagonise readers and then scrambling to fix it. But if I could go back in time I wouldn't change the core of her story, I'd just tweak the details so it hit better faster. Because there's something so fascinating to me about the way that giving runa these huge, catastrophic missteps in her life and then getting to spend six seasons working through them and learning to evaluate herself more fairly, more generously, acts as a magnifier for very real feelings that a lot of people have dealt with.

It was so, so cathartic actually to take a charcater who really has done awful things and say "yes, she can learn and grow from them and she deserves not only to be loved by others but also to love herself". Like if she can do it, maybe any of us can.

And really what better production limitation for that story than to start from such a messy and chaotic accident of storytelling and to spend another five seasons picking at it and turning it over and examining it, and to get to somewhere good that I'm still really proud of.

Love you forever runa, you helped me work through some feelings and you definitely made me a better writer.
