Prestige Class Spotlight 6: Runeguard
Funnily enough, just as I picked out this prestige class to do this week, I ran across the Cyphermage organization in Adventurer’s Guide, which includes a great set of options for specialists in the same sort of spellcasting as today’s entry.
Runeguards are masters of a specific brand of magic, namely Thassalonian Sin Magic. Or more accurately, Virtue Magic, as they have, through painstaking research, recovered the secrets of the original form of Xin’s arcane philosophy before it was corrupted by his wicked and unworthy students.
In a neutral setting, these might be particularly goodly masters of a very school-focused magical discipline.
It is worth noting that while this class is clearly geared towards wizards, and perhaps specifically sin magic specialists that want to turn their spells towards goodly ends, there is no restriction on the class or even type of magic that these mystics have to cast. Indeed, I could easily see divine and even psychic casters making use of these abilities.
Regardless of their magical discipline, all spells that create runes, symbols, or glyphs are open for them to learn.
As they grow in mastery, they learn the special rune of each of the seven virtues, adding them to their arsenal.
The rune of Charity, which represents abjuration, allows them to transfer spell energy and a single abjuration spell to cast with it to an ally, allowing them to ward themselves when they decide they need it.
The Kindness rune of evocation allows them to heal others with mundane medicine with impressive ease and with negligible medical supplies expended.
With Generoscity, they can convert raw spell power into a useful blessing to aid the ability, attacks, or defenses of an ally.
Conversely, Humiity allows them to do the same to themselves when receiving aid from another, gaining insight from their benevolence.
The rune of Love allows the caster to sacrifice magic to forge a powerful bond with others, allowing them to sense their status, or even communicate with thought if the spell energy was enough.
Temperance can ward the bearer of the rune against negative energy, and these mystics can learn to quickly scribe it as such effects come their way, though doing so tires them.
Finally, the Zeal rune grants them great focus in casting spells, ignoring distractions and even weaving minor metamagical techniques into their spells.
Over time, they perfect their application of their runic spells and language-dependant effects, making them harder to resist.
The most powerful among them, however, can make a single spell that creates a glyph permanent, though they can change which one this is each day if they choose to.
Interested in a glyph-focused mage with a wide variety of symbols in addition to their spells? This prestige class might be just what you’re looking for, preparing a battlefield with traps, and applying buffs on the fly with their runes. I recommend a support build for this purpose, as well as control spells to help herd foes into their symbols.
Outside of the setting in question, this prestige class further illustrates how the notion of magic schools colors how it is viewed in-setting. Furthermore, these casters might have a dubious reputation, both for dabbling in what some scholars assume is merely sin magic, while others may be distrustful of them due to their reliance on magical traps.
With their tendency towards school-based casting and esoteric lore, its no surprise that occultists are a surprisingly common type of practitioner among runeguards. One such individual, Tiska Fleetwater, has been collecting symbol spells and the secrets of planar calling for years, though what the tiny halfling is planning to do is another story. The trail of adventuring parties found dead in various ruins after being hired to escort her, however, speaks of some ill intent, yet her powers seem goodly and benevolent.
For decades, the kasatha immigrants to Yusui desert have been drawing large, elaborate runes into the sand itself, their full extent only visible from the sky. Is it a message to something in the sky? Part of some colossal undertaking with a magical ritual? None know, but there is no denying the sort of magic they wield through symbology.
The Elder Sign is merely the greatest mark left behind in the ruins of Ko Paksa, for they remain guarded by powerful symbol spells and the horrific fleshwarp creations of the former inhabitants, including the feral trollhounds. Though weak, their regenerative tenacity has worn down many an ill-prepared explorer before they even see their first symbol of death. An expert on mystic symbology, however, might be able to make it far.
