Game Music Now - Mega Man 7
“Shade Man” by Yuko Takehara, Toshihiko Horiyama, and Makoto Tomozawa
Holy crap, Mighty No. 9 finally got confirmed for gold. This is a loose celebration, but I’ll put up my favorite track, Shade Man, from the underrated Mega Man 7. I’m not totally sure why MM7 was somewhat critically pasted, but I guess people felt the SNES aesthetic felt a bit weird with the classic series. The larger sprites felt a bit off and the difficulty balance was weird, with the final battle against Dr. Wily taking a HIGH difficulty spike. I also feel that since Mega Man X was the hotness in the mid nineties, classic Mega Man just felt a bit dull too. BUT in spite of all those legitimate points of criticism, I still just like 7 since it hits this odd point somewhere between the classic series and the X games that makes it feel unique. Plus, Rush Search is just too adorable.
Also, if you hold the B button when you pick Shade Man, his stage can also play the classic Ghosts ‘N Goblins theme. That’s always fun, but I just like Shade Man’s broody default music so much that I don’t know which one to go for sometimes.
