My Only
He never received them, never had to worry about them, never given a chance to have that kind of responsibility.
But it wasn’t so much a prayer as it was more of a plea. And he wouldn’t deny anyone that. Not anyone. So when the angel appeared before the wreckage, he continued to hear the voice, even over the loud cry from one of the vehicles. With a raise of his hand however, he silenced it, and moved forward. The angel overlooked the helpless people; they were not of his concern, since it was not his place to meddle anyhow. But how he could ignore the very first one that called to him?
Crouching down, he glanced inside the shattered window of an overturned car, and was quite startled to see Russell inside. This had to be a mistake, didn’t it?
“Y-you gonna sit there a-and stare...mate?”
Apparently it wasn’t a mistake at all. After Elijah pulled the demon out from the vehicle with as much care as possible, he pressed two digits to his forehead, and all the blood and scrapes were gone. Russell looked upon him with shock when he’d done that, but he was grateful, not that he’d ever show it. “Figures a sod like you wouldn’t refuse.”
The angel glanced around. “Did you cause this?”
“No,” Russell answered as he got a good look at his car. “Dammit.” Sure, he could get around with a blink of an eye, but he liked to drive around listening to his favorite tunes. “Probably some drunk or a bloody teenager texting.”
Looking over his shoulder, Elijah could see the flashing lights in the distance. He grabbed hold of the demon beside him, not without a squawk of protest from him, and disappeared from the accident.
“Hands off!” Russell demanded. Adjusting his clothes, he sniffed and looked around. “Where’d you take me, feather-brain?”
“This is just some woodlands south from the city. Are we quite done here?”
The demon stepped forward with a narrow of his eyes. “Don’t you want your ‘thank you’ kiss?”
With a faint expression of disdain, Elijah calmly pushed Russell back.
Regaining his balance with a flail of his arms, Russell shouted, “What the hell is your problem? Why the fuck did you save me?”
“I was answering your prayer.”
Tch. He wasn’t praying. Not at all. He would have gotten out of that safe and sound. “So do you answer all the damn prayers?”
“That was my only one.”
Russell stared back in disbelief, before a grin spread across his face. “So I popped your prayer cherry, eh?”
Apparently that’s where the angel had drawn the line, because he was gone.
“So if I’m feeling really hot and lonely would you come to my rescue, Elijah?” Russell shouted with mirth.
He’d have to try that sometime.
