September 3rd is a special day in Russian meme culture. And it's all because of one incredibly catchy song.
The song was released sometime in the 90s and became an instant hit. It's about the arrival of autumn and a painful breakup. The memeable part is that every chorus starts with the line: "Я календарь переверну и снова третье сентября" ("I'll turn the calendar page and it's September 3rd again").
In the song, this date is called the "day of parting," and the heartbroken protagonist is so devastated that it's as if he's trapped, seeing September 3rd every time he looks at a calendar.
Over time, the romantic tragedy of the song took a back seat. About 20 years after its release, a younger generation started to interpret it with post-irony—as a song about a dude stuck in a time loop, doomed to relive the same sad day over and over.
For the last 10 years, memes about this song have been popping up every autumn in various forms. Also, many people just like the singer himself, Mikhail Shufutinsky.
So, the real essence of the meme isn't that we actively listen to the song all day. It's that on this one day, it's utterly impossible to escape it.
You don't just listen to the song on September 3rd — you experience it through an inescapable wave of memes, random quotes, and Shufutinsky's face everywhere online. It's a national inside joke you never signed up for, but can't avoid.
Fun fact: In season 3 of "The Boys," a new character, Soldier Boy, was introduced. If I remember correctly he had fits of uncontrollable rage when he heard Russian songs... and those songs were by Shufutinsky! The famous "September 3rd" never actually played, but I still want to thank the show's creators. It was a brilliant script choice because, after 10 years of memes, Shufutinsky's songs could legitimately be used as a method of torture.
