Isn't that exactly what Hank did to John? Lol. I know they suspected John of stealing but he was still unarmed. -Olive getting squeamish and Jake fainting. Lol!

Yeah, they’re all a little backwards and generally hypocritical. If Matthew had fessed up, they wouldn’t have been nearly as upset. They pick and choose which laws to follow based on what suits them at the time. Thankfully Olive was compassionate and dropped the charges.
