“WATER OF LIFE”
By Rustam QBic
With the popular Edvard Munch Museum scheduled to move to the Oslo waterfront in 2020 the people of the Tøyen neighborhood—where it is currently located—are concerned about keeping some focus on their community. As the site of numerous large gable walls at the ends of houses and housing developments, the urban art association Urban Samtidskunst determined that Tøyen offered many opportunities for murals and has proposed turning the neighborhood into the largest outdoor gallery in the Nordic region. With several installations now complete this 2016 work on Gruegata was painted over the course of two weeks by visiting Russian artist Rustam QBic. Reflecting his typical surreal, detail-filled storybook style QBic picked up on the color palette of the surrounding trees and buildings to paint a work he told Hi Fructose “speaks about finding a source of life energy.” @rustamqbic @urbansamtidskunst @themunchmuseum @hifructosemag

“STAR CATCHER”
by Rustam QBic
Born in 2013 out of a desire to get busy Portlanders to pause in their daily lives long enough to take in their city Forest For The Trees has become a Northwest institution. Painting at SW Park Ave between Main and Salmon in 2015, Russian surrealist Rustam Kubik, aka QBic, took the festival’s vision a step further, not just looking beyond trees to see the forest, but the whole universe beyond. From Kazan, Tatarstan—about 500 miles east of Moscow—QBic studied at Kazan Art College then went on to teach at the Children’s School of Design, perhaps explaining what Beautiful Decay describes as work “saturated with lush storybook colors and defined by a playful sense of the absurd.” Street Art Rat says QBic’s complex works are loaded with details and worth looking at up close whenever you get a chance. @rustamqbic @ffttnw
