“Did I just scare your client away? Maybe. Is it bad for business? Maybe.”

He was impulsive. Maybe acting like the jealous boyfriend to scare that man away wasn’t exactly a good idea, precisely because he had never been the jealous kind to begin with, but this served a greater purpose. He was needy. He wanted attention. That night, he was overcome by the whimsical realization that he wanted to spend time with Lex and the rest of the world could burn.

“Do I care? Absolutely not. We’re having a date and it’s gonna be more fun!”

“Well I’ll be damned, sleeping junkie survived the night. Can’t say I’m not surprised,” the cat quipped, eyeing the very human boy with a less than friendly smile. “I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t share your fucking drugs with my sister in the future or I might think twice about keeping your ass from getting murdered in some seedy ass “club” in the worst part of fucking town.”

Daniel hadn’t considered himself an angel in millennia, but when it came down to it, his own opinions on that front hadn’t mattered. He’d never technically fallen so he’d ended up stuck with some angelic duties anyway. He’d ended up with a human to look after. One who, apparently, had some shit luck.

Angels weren’t supposed to reveal themselves to their charges and Daniel knew that, but they also weren’t supposed to let them fucking die either. It was a shit choice to go with shit luck, but he’d never liked the rules to begin with so why start following them now.

“Alright, kid, just give me a second. It’s been a while since I’ve done this.” In fact, he wasn’t sure he still knew how to do it, even still had the powers. But if they’d assigned him a human, they had to have known he could protect one. He crouched down next to the teen and tried to find the least damaged patch of skin to rest his hand on, before focusing on healing the wounds and easing the pain. It felt slower than he remembered it, but after a moment, it seemed to be making a difference.

Giving as much blood as he did was always physically exhausting and Devin wasted no time just falling into his bed once he was sure Lis was stable. He was out of it enough to, for a moment, forget that Zayde was still there until he sat up to make sure his phone was plugged in and practically jumped.

“Shit, sorry. Startled me,” he mumbled.

Devin had gone on a food run, needing to get whatever it was he ate after playing blood donor to her. Talyse was supposed to be over soon and she could only guess he figured Zayde would be asleep a little while longer. He had been doing a shitty job of hiding the fact that boy was even there. 

She wasn’t supposed to be out of bed, but Lissa was tired of hearing them argue and the stench of despair and depression wasn’t easy to deal with in her current state either.

“What in the actual fuck is wrong with you?” she growled from the doorway, blocking his only viable escape as she glared at him. There was no way she was going to be delicate about any of this, but he should have already known how blunt she was.

It was rare for any of the extended family to bring anyone else around these days, so Cord was a little on edge about Vega bringing a human. It wasn’t really the kid that was the problem, although there were issues with that in itself, it was more that he wasn’t sure he trusted some of the hounds or even some of the others that lived on the property. Vega had given the heads up that the boy didn’t know exactly where she was bringing him or who and what ran the place. 

Still, it meant a lot to his niece and he could try to keep things as normal passing as possible. 

“You must be Rabbit.”
