There were some lovely insights that I’m sure a lot of calligraphy enthusiasts are aware of.

Some things should be kept alive. I was a mediocre-to-near-failing student in design school because I didn’t give two shits about convenience, mass-production, making money, and therefore didn’t think much of typography and layout. If I could have learned in this form and the motive was different, I would have paid a lot more attention. I would choose meticulous and thoughtful one-offs to mass production any day.

Fair enough now that I’m not a designer and am learning how to tattoo.

Indie film Snow wins at CIFF

Big congrats to Ryan Couldrey, director and producer of Snow, for winning the Special Jury Prize at the Canada International Film Festival this year! Based on a graphic novel of the same name, Snow is a beautiful glimpse at one woman’s relationship with her beloved Toronto neighborhood, as she sees it changing rapidly around her. It's great. 

Plus Couldrey is making it epically easy to watch: the film is free on a bunch of platforms OR you can support Snow directly by buying it on their website. Ubiquity! We keep seeing that free content can be a catalyst for sales.

Selling from his VHX-powered website means Couldrey had the flexibility to go DRM-free and include lots of bonuses. He says, "With Snow, it was important that we be able to not only include the film and extra video content with purchases, but also things like PDF scripts, a digital copy of the graphic novel the film was adapted from, the original soundtrack and even a PC video game based on the story."
