Ryan Culwell - “The Last American”
SXSW 2019 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 2
Pairs Well With…Ryan Adams, The War on Drugs, Sturgill Simpson
Ryan Culwell’s 2018 record The Last American is one the best under-the-radar, alt country albums of last year, a collection of blue-collar rock from Heartland pastures and bygone factory towns. Culwell’s songwriting is a mix of personal and cultural, studied in classic rock modes, but complimented with a subtle wash of dream pop atmosphere. Blues ramblers (“Dig A Hole”), lush acoustic ballads (“The Last American”), and jamming psych rock (“Heaven Everywhere I Go”) forms give the album, Culwell’s third in twelve years, a sense of expansiveness that breaks knowingly out of his Americana roots. Culwell’s voice matches the tone of his songs fluidly, a rich, somewhat gritty tone steeped in experience and back-porch soul. Ryan Culwell showcases at SXSW on March 12th at Mohawk alongside a set of fellow alt country and blues rock artists from Nine Mile Records.
Form and repetition!
